Hello everyone,

Are there any recommendations or experience reports regarding light fixture installation (recessed spotlights, pendant lamps) with a solid wood ceiling? Especially the light above a dining table, since during the construction phase you probably don’t have the table or its exact position yet, and therefore cannot determine the exact spot for the fixture. And if the wiring is installed from the floor above, the position has to be fixed precisely. With a suspended ceiling, you have more flexibility because the wiring inside the ceiling cavity can be adjusted to some extent. I would appreciate hearing about your experiences, maybe even with some photos.

Thank you very much

I don’t fully understand the question. What is more difficult with a solid wood ceiling compared to a standard solid concrete ceiling?

If you don’t want to decide in advance where the table will be placed, you install wiring to potential lighting locations and install a ceiling canopy over them.

I understand that for something like a concrete ceiling, you need to fix the positions in advance. But with a wooden ceiling, this will probably be done more often later on, as long as you can still access from above. Maybe someone has other solutions to stay at least somewhat flexible. I don’t really want a canopy. I would rather have a track system. Perhaps there will only be one fixed position for the dining table once the shell construction is complete. For other areas, wall-mounted lights are also an option.

I’m simply assuming that by wooden ceiling you mean a visible wood ceiling?

Back then, I walked through the shell construction with my electrician and finalized the positions. As you suspect, this is indeed much easier during the shell stage than just "by plan."

Yes, I mean a solid wood ceiling with visible quality. I think some aspects can be planned in advance. Others probably only once the shell of the building is completed. At that point, you can also test how different lights look and whether they provide enough illumination, assuming you already have the lights beforehand.
