Hello,

we are currently planning to build a house.

One of our dreams is to have a private DVD/home theater room.

Has anyone done something similar before? How did you approach it?

Our first idea was to set up the DVD room in a converted attic. However, our space requirements keep growing the more time we spend planning 🙂

That’s why we are now considering whether it would be possible to create a home theater in the basement? It would be nicely dark down there 😉 But what about ventilation options? Does a sound system or the picture quality behave differently in a basement compared to above ground?

What type of flooring would be best for a basement home theater? I’m a big fan of wood floors, but I’ve never seen hardwood flooring installed in a basement…

Could using a projector and screen cause other issues?

Sorry for all the odd questions… I’m just not sure if this is a realistic idea or if I should maybe scrap it altogether…

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to your answers!

Best regards,
Nixa

Hi,

we recently installed this setup at my parents’ place (about 1 month ago).

Brief background:
My parents have Premiere, and every Saturday we gather about 5-10 people in the basement to watch football. Until now, it was always on an old CRT TV. Then someone had the idea that everyone could chip in around 30 euros for a nice projector with a screen and sound system, which was already in the basement.

So we went ahead and bought an Acer projector along with a retractable screen. Both were mounted on the ceiling, cables were run from the decoder to the projector and the sound system. Now we watch football on an area of about 4 square meters (43 square feet).

The basement is the ideal spot. Even though the projector has over 2000 ANSI lumens and is suitable for daylight conditions, we chose the basement setup because the picture quality is absolutely excellent. I’ll try to post some pictures of the installation if I visit my parents this week.

Ventilation should not be an issue since we mounted it directly under the ceiling (bare reinforced concrete, just wallpapered). Of course, it releases heat to the concrete, but as long as the fan vents are unobstructed, it’s no problem. The projector ran perfectly fine for 4 hours nonstop (football plus post-match coverage).

The onboard camera shots during Formula 1 are really cool too — you almost feel like you’re driving the car yourself.

Good luck!
