Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my Kallax shelf where some screws loosen over time, making the shelf unstable. This keeps happening even when I tighten them properly. Do you know any effective tips or methods to prevent the screws from loosening permanently? I’m thinking of repair approaches or certain tools that can be easily used at home. It’s important to me that the solution is practical and can be done without much effort.

I would really appreciate your experiences and suggestions!

The issue of loose screws in Kallax-style shelves can often be resolved by repairing the screw holes in the wood. Since Kallax units are usually made of particleboard, the threads wear out quickly from repeated tightening and loosening.

A proven solution is to use so-called wood threaded inserts or threaded bolts, which are carefully installed into the stripped threads. This reinforces the screw hole and allows the screw to grip firmly again.

Alternatively, wood glue or a mixture of wood shavings and glue can be applied inside the screw hole before re-tightening the screw, creating a solid base for the thread. Thread-locking collars or threadlocker (Loctite) can help prevent screws from loosening but do not replace the need to reinforce the threaded hole.

In summary: stabilize screw holes with wood threaded inserts or improve them with glue filling, and secure screws with threadlocking agents.

Exactly, these inserts are great. Just be very careful when installing them, otherwise you might enlarge the hole even more.

I also always use threadlocker – it really helps.

I would like to share a simple solution that worked very well for me. First, you should carefully check the screw holes. If the threads are usually stripped or too wide, it helps to fill the hole with wood shavings from similar wood and wood glue. After drying, you can screw in the screw again – it will hold firmly once more.

Additionally, I recommend the following procedure:

1. Remove the screws completely and clean the holes.
2. Fill the holes with wood shavings and wood glue, then let it set for about 20–30 minutes.
3. Carefully screw the screws back in and tighten them.
4. Finally, for a long-lasting hold, you can use threadlocker to prevent the screws from loosening on their own.

It is especially important not to overtighten the screws, as this stretches the receiving material and damages the wood again.

If you use threaded inserts, make sure they match the screw diameter exactly – oversized inserts can damage the wood again.

I hope this step-by-step guide helps you manage the problem better.
