Hello everyone,
Over the weekend, I cleared about 35m x 2m x 5m (115ft x 6.5ft x 16ft) of hornbeam hedge on my undeveloped plot. By calculation, that amounts to around 350m³ (12,370 cubic feet). It’s probably less if you compress the branches a bit.
I need this space for construction. The hedge will be replanted afterwards, but clearing it was essential for the build.
My question is, what should I do with the material? I could try shredding it with a garden shredder, but that will likely take a long time.
Do you have any ideas? The fire department no longer accepts donations for Easter bonfires. The recycling center also declines due to the volume.
Unfortunately, I can’t just place a container and fill it for collection because my property doesn’t yet allow for that option.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Is it possible to transplant a hedge like this? Then you can definitely find someone on Craigslist or similar local classifieds who could use a hornbeam hedge.
Edit: Just looked it up… you can’t transplant an old hedge anymore..
Burning it is probably not allowed either.. hmm…

Yes, burning is prohibited in Berlin. As far as I know, it is still allowed in some municipalities in Brandenburg, unless there is a general ban due to dry conditions.
Bags are also available, but only for leaves and grass clippings. These are handled separately, probably because too much leaves and grass clippings cause problems during composting.

With dry branches, you are allowed to make a small fire up to 1 m (3.3 feet) in diameter in Brandenburg.
Oh, so it is generally not allowed there either (burning garden waste).
Just checked again. It seems only Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Saxony-Anhalt do not have a general ban on burning. However, there are regional exceptions or permits available upon request.
In Berlin, it is not allowed. So, never permitted.

Take a look at commercial waste disposal sites. We always bring our large amounts of stuff there because the city only allows 1 cubic meter (1.3 cubic yards) per day and household. It costs about 10 euros to dispose of a large trailer load. Alternatively, you can also list it on EKA; maybe someone wants to take it as firewood or chip it themselves. It shouldn’t be a problem to get rid of it.
Thanks for all the input.
I have now decided to have my excavation contractor pick it up in a container. €1200 🙁
However, it all needs to be removed quickly because I already have more than enough requirements from the tree protection office in Hamburg.
The alternative would be to rent a large wood chipper. This is not feasible at short notice before the bird nesting season in my area.
The recycling center in Hamburg only accepts 3m² (36 sq ft). Even for a fee, they won’t take more.
