Hi everyone,
what are the advantages and disadvantages of a single-family house?
Option 1:
Heating: Air-to-water heat pump with underfloor heating
Hot water: Air-to-water heat pump
Option 2:
Heating: Air-to-air heat pump (multi-split)
Hot water: Solar thermal system plus a small gas boiler for extended bad weather

To look at it from a different perspective: a hydronic heating system that distributes heat through water is more flexible. You can connect solar collectors, storage tanks, water-based fireplaces, combined heat and power (CHP) systems, electric heaters, local/district heating, or burners â and soon even fusion reactors ;-)
For me, that alone is the reason not to choose an "air heating" system.

So, my cousin has an air heating system, and so do two neighbors. They each also have an additional domestic hot water heat pump (DHW HP); there is absolutely nothing space-saving about these. These Proxon units probably cover about 2m² (22 sq ft), and because of the piping running upwards, the space above is also unusable. A more space-efficient option would be a combined system with controlled indoor ventilation plus an air-to-water heat pump, like the Tecalor 504. That is, assuming you donât mind installing a heating unit costing around 40k.
And yes, of course, thereâs a lot that can go wrong with the hydraulics or if you simply design it as a standard 08/15 system with 35°C (95°F) supply temperature. But even a poorly installed underfloor heating system will hardly be as inefficient as an air-to-air heat pump. So, in the end, it comes down to initial investment versus running costs. Youâre talking about a completely different system ;-)

I had already suggested further differentiation there, but you just dismissed it.
So is the distinction actually useful after all?

Alessandro8 Aug 2023 16:34The thread starter is talking about a multisplit system. There has never been any mention of a Proxon air-to-air heat pump!

The original poster mentions a multisplit system. Alessandro schrieb:
This is about a VRF system, not a simple air conditioning split unit. So what is it exactly?
And the OP also talks about gas plus solar thermal for domestic hot water, but then you suddenly switched to (electric?) tankless water heaters.
Letâs clarify: the range of possible heating systems is broader than what the OP outlined and also broader than the solution Alessandro presented.
Using broad terms like "air-to-air heat pump" only causes confusion.
Which manufacturer actually installs VRF systems with cassette units in single-family homes?
What is the cost for such a setup? And what COP can be expected?
