Hello,
I am currently planning a single-family bungalow. It will likely be built using solid construction or blockwork. Since the standard ceiling height feels "oppressive" to me, especially with a lot of exposed wood in the ceiling, I would like to build with a higher ceiling height.
How can I determine which ceiling height is suitable for me?
I assume there isn’t a “model room” with different ceiling heights to experience. Or am I just overlooking something?
Thanks in advance.
Regards

When you hover over the mentioned usernames, you can access their post history. For example, I recommend @blaupuma – they have a nice example from the house company, featuring a white acoustic ceiling (though I’m not sure if it’s in one of their threads or in the house photos thread). However, you will probably find it faster through a general image search – that would be my suggestion as an alternative to the traditional wooden board ceiling underside, which in my opinion always has a sort of seventies retro "charm."

Regarding ceiling height,
the footprint determines the house dimensions, for example 12 x 15m (39 x 49 feet).
To complete the external appearance and provide weather protection, a roof is needed.
For roof tiles, there is a minimum roof pitch required; for flat or shed roofs, this can be lower.
For gable or hip roofs, the pitch is often between 25-35°.
This means that from the 12m (39 feet) width minus twice the thickness of the exterior walls, you get an interior room width of about 11m (36 feet) plus some additional space.
If the interior wall height is 2.6m (8.5 feet), the ridge beam height will be around 6m (20 feet). Each degree of roof pitch increases or decreases this height by approximately 25cm (10 inches) (please verify this value, as it is an estimate).
If the room is 4 x 4m (13 x 13 feet), 6m (20 feet) height may not look proportional, but in an 11 x 6m (36 x 20 feet) space, it appears generous and well-balanced. This means that your room size should match the height.
Additionally, aesthetics play a role: dark ceilings tend to feel lower, while light ceilings feel higher. Daylight should also reach this upper space.
A gallery or other elevated features add interest to the room.
From an energy perspective, heating a larger volume is more costly—you heat the space from the bottom, and warm air rises, meaning the upper areas are always warmer. This affects both winter heating and summer cooling.
In my post history, you’ll find limited information about our bungalow, which is planned for two people, is barrier-free, and includes a sauna.

How can I find out which ceiling height is suitable for me? Simply pay close attention to the ceiling height in relation to the size of the room every time you enter a space. Carry a small laser distance measurer and quickly measure the ceilings of rooms you find comfortable. Analyze the data and identify patterns.
