Hello everyone,

we have a roughly 1000 sqm (approximately 10,764 sq ft) flat plot of land, and I’ve been thinking about creating a play hill.

During the current construction phase, we piled up the excavation soil from the house in a large mound right in the middle of the lot. It still needs to be spread out.

My idea now is to take some of that soil and shape a small hill in a corner or along the edge of the property for the children to play on. A small tree and grass on top would help prevent the soil from washing away.

Later, it could be used as a base for a waterfall – or flattened again.

What do you think? Has anyone had experience with this? About how big should it be?

Building it is great for the children.
It shouldn’t be too small, otherwise it becomes uninteresting. It then has to go down again towards the property boundary.

Hello,
that’s a great plan. It really shouldn’t be too small, at least 2 meters (6.5 feet) high would be ideal. In the playground here in the new development area, the city has also created something similar. The hill is the most used "play equipment." Depending on the children’s mood during the day, it serves as a

  • castle
  • ship on the high seas
  • glider launch ramp
  • lookout tower
  • sledding hill
  • kamikaze track for scooters, ride-on cars, and bikes (not for parents with weak nerves)
  • sun terrace
  • etc....

Good luck!

If you still have leftover excavated soil, why not use it?
A similar idea came to me recently when we were at the playground near the slide. It makes sense starting at a height difference of about 1 meter (3 feet), since you can place a slide there. You might also dig a little around it so it doesn’t get too tall. Or build a small retaining wall on one side to prevent it from spreading out too much.

That reminds me of my childhood when we raced down the excavation mound in the new development area around the corner.

I think I’ll plan it and discuss with the civil engineer what’s possible.

Thanks for your encouraging responses.

I would have gone all out earlier as well. And the kids have already claimed the excavation mound right away. It would be a shame to take that away from them again.

How did you imagine using it for a waterfall later on?
