I am planning to build a retaining wall. It will be adjacent to an existing garage wall (made of sand-lime brick). Between the retaining wall (reinforced concrete) and the garage (sand-lime brick), I will include a 1cm (0.4 inch) expansion joint.

To prevent shear displacement, shear connectors are usually installed. Is it possible to use such connectors in my case? In other words, can a connection between reinforced concrete and sand-lime brick be made?

Thank you for your response. Please see the sketch in the attachment.

For this method of connecting two walls when interlocking is not possible, so-called wall ties are used. These are drilled or anchored into one wall and extend into the new wall to be constructed. In the case of a concrete wall, reinforcing bars can also be used; however, the joint between the walls must then be sealed watertight to prevent the steel reinforcement from rusting – alternatively, stainless steel bars can be used. Although more expensive, they require less material overall.
