Hello everyone,

Now that our house construction project is finished, we can fully focus on the next big project: the garden and a complete redesign of the outdoor area.

I have a green thumb for indoor plants, but I really don’t know how to approach gardening outside. Here are some basic details:
Our garden surrounds the house completely, except for the front, where there is only a strip about 1.50 meters (5 feet) wide, plus a paved walkway to the front door. On the west side, the green strip is 6 meters (20 feet) wide and 22 meters (72 feet) long. On the south side, we have a 10 meter (33 feet) wide and 22 meter (72 feet) long area. The east side is not available for gardening, as that’s where the driveway and garage are located.
We are currently installing privacy screens to prevent our neighbors from looking directly into the living room. Each of these privacy panels has a trellis in the middle.

So far, so good. Now for my questions and ideas, hoping there are people here with more expertise than I have:

I would like to plant clematis in front of the trellises. I’m also considering a lot of bamboo. But how do I go about this? I’m not a fan of traditional garden beds. Or are they basically necessary if I want to mow the lawn properly later? How have you done it?
And what is the right order to do all this? Obviously, first the privacy screens (we’ve already started this), then the plants, and last the lawn? Or would you wait to plant anything until the entire garden and the terrace are fully finished? And if I do have to use edging stones, do I install the stones first and then the plants?
As you can see, I’m clueless.

Maybe someone also has some tips on how to green up the garden more. So far it’s just soil, soil, and more soil. No plants, no shrubs. I really have to start from scratch.

Thanks in advance for any advice! 🙂
Yours, Nina
