Hello everyone,

I recently ordered new KALLAX shelving inserts and noticed they emit a very strong odor that bothers me somewhat. My question to the community is quite specific: Is it possible to neutralize the smell from new KALLAX shelving inserts, and if so, which methods have worked well for you? I am thinking about measures such as airing them out, using special cleaning agents, or home remedies, but I am open to all suggestions.

What matters most to me are practical tips that provide lasting results, as the odor has significantly affected my use so far. Thanks in advance!

The smell is noticeably weaker but not completely gone yet.

That’s already great! :-) That’s usually how it goes, step by step. The important thing is not to give up. Maybe you could try moving the furniture piece into other rooms with the window open every now and then – sometimes that speeds up the air exchange. Wishing you continued success!

Hello everyone,

I contacted IKEA today. Customer service confirmed that a slight odor from new KALLAX inserts is normal and originates from VOCs in the coating. They recommend thorough ventilation with an open window and, if possible, treatment with activated charcoal. No official cleaning or neutralizing agents were mentioned.

I will continue to follow these suggestions here and report back if I gain any further insights. Thanks for the helpful posts!

Thanks for the feedback; that confirms the suspicions.

I recommend everyone bothered by this issue to actively research low-emission alternatives. There are now furniture options with significantly lower VOC levels—very interesting if odor neutrality is important to someone.

This discussion is really taking off!

I just wanted to add: In my experience, the combination of ventilation, baking soda, and coffee almost completely eliminated the odor within about 2 weeks (14 days)! 🙂 Patience pays off, everyone!

Thanks to all for the great tips!
