Hi everyone,

My wife and I are planning to buy a house, and we would like to remove a wall and build a new drywall partition in a shifted position.

Specifically, it concerns the partition between the bathroom and the toilet. We want to combine these into one room, making it a bit larger and brighter. Above this area is only the attic of the extension. The bathroom, kitchen, toilet, and hallway are located in the extension.

I have attached an excerpt from the floor plan. The wall sections marked in red are to be removed, and the drywall partition should be built along the blue line.

Floor plan of a house with kitchen, bathroom, hallway, and entrance area.

Is it possible to tell from this whether this can be done? The red wall elements both have a thickness of 17.5cm (7 inches), unfortunately, I cut off the right measurement while cropping.

I hope someone can help me with this. The house itself was built in 1925, but I do not know exactly when the extension was added.

I meant to say yes, I just couldn’t think of it at the time.

But what about the costs? At least a rough estimate. Can you give a general idea?

So if he only inspects the site and gives his opinion, expect to pay around 80 to 100 € per hour. If you want a written report, I would expect 300 to 500 €, provided everything regarding the structural behavior is clear. The time he spends on-site will of course be charged separately.

Okay, so I have a rough idea of what that means.

Is there anyone here in the forum who is located in the Dortmund area / Unna district and has possibly already hired a structural engineer?

Because sure, I could just look up the Yellow Pages and start calling. But I think among them, there are both good and less reliable professionals, so maybe one of you knows someone in the area you can recommend?

What about platforms like MyHammer.de? Or are they less recommended?

Hello,

If you are considering Myhammer, I can only recommend thoroughly checking the background of the companies or individuals who contact you.

Offers from generalists without specific expertise are quite common here – whether you want to entrust a structural engineering request to a trained tiler (absolutely no offense intended) is something I would seriously doubt... 😉

Best regards,

Yes, I have considered it. When I moved last time, I had my washing machine (Miele) and dining table (solid wood, extendable to 2.9m (9.5 feet)) transported for a low cost. So, carrying downstairs, transporting, and carrying upstairs.

I’ll give it a try. Or maybe I’ll call a structural engineer to discuss it. Although, you usually don’t know in advance if they really know what they’re doing and, secondly, if they charge reasonable prices or if they’ll charge an arm and a leg.
