ᐅ Assembly of BILLY shelves on the underfloor heating system.

I am planning to install a Billy bookshelf in my living room; the issue is that the floor there has a heating system with underfloor heating pipes carrying hot water. My specific question is: Are there any special installation instructions or risks when fixing the bookshelf directly onto a floor with underfloor heating?

I am particularly interested in whether the typical installation method involving drilling or screwing into the floor could cause damage if I want to avoid harming the floor, or how to prevent stress caused by heat expansion. Has anyone had experience with the Billy bookshelf on or near an underfloor heating system? I do not want to separate the bookshelf from the floor, but rather secure it safely without causing any issues. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Thanks for the feedback so far! To clarify: my floor is laminate over a hydronic (warm water) underfloor heating system, not a screed directly underneath.

Wall mounting is basically possible, but the wall behind the shelf has several electrical outlets and doesn’t look ideal. Therefore, I’m leaning towards securely fixing the shelf directly on the floor.

Are there special feet or mounting methods that don’t interfere with the heating circuits? Would it make sense to use spacers to improve heat and moisture distribution? Or should I strictly avoid the risk of damaging the floor?

What do you think about relatively heavy shelves on laminate flooring over underfloor heating in general, if they rest only on standing feet?

Thank you for the clarification. Laminate flooring may expand slightly due to temperature changes, but usually not significantly. However, the shelving should be installed as "floating," meaning it should not be fixed directly to the floor to avoid material stress.

There are adjustable feet with rubber or felt pads that are well suited to support the shelving securely while not interfering with the heating system. Spacers under the shelf base can help prevent unnecessary heat buildup.

Furthermore, it is advisable to distribute loads evenly and to avoid setting the underfloor heating temperature unnecessarily high, as this can accelerate the aging of the laminate.

Overall: drilling into the floor is not recommended. Alternative mounting methods provide safe protection for the heating system.

It’s important to me that the shelf remains flexibly mounted, not fixed too rigidly directly on the underfloor heating.

I agree completely. You should also consider that materials can expand when heated, especially wood.

Therefore, I recommend avoiding rigid fixings to prevent stress that could eventually cause damage to the shelf or the floor.

From my own experience: I have a shelf with adjustable feet and no floor fixings; it stands securely and without any issues even during the underfloor heating’s winter operation.

Keep it flexible and think carefully about whether you really need a floor screw, or if a stable wall fixing and appropriate feet will suffice.
