Hi everyone,

On Thursday, we have the bathroom selection appointment. Just thinking about it makes me a bit anxious because my wife said that bathrooms are her area of expertise and she wants to choose everything there.

Well, what tips can you give me to make sure it doesn’t get out of hand?

We are dealing with 3 bathrooms, which include the following fixtures:
- 3 toilets
- 3 walk-in showers (1 rain shower, 2 standard)
- 2 single washbasins
- 1 double washbasin
- 1 bathtub
- other accessories

I have already read through some threads. My plan is to buy the ceramics, drain channels, and fittings from the plumber and to source and install the following myself:
- mirror / mirrored cabinet
- furniture
- electric towel warmer
- towel rails
- toilet paper holder
- toilet brush holder

Do you have any further ideas or (insider) tips on where to get the listed items well and affordably?

Best regards

They tried to sell us toilet seats that gently close with silicone dampers. What nonsense.

Alternatively, our 20€ duropolymer seat from eBay also has damping. Such "features" are not a valid reason for unnecessarily high prices.

Toilet seats like these can save your nerves when you have small children around. They are also often available at a discount as clearance stock in hardware stores.

We sourced the washbasins, mirrored cabinets, faucets, and lights ourselves.

It is important to have a clear idea of what you like and what it might cost before the sample selection appointment.

Our washbasins cost less than half of those in the showroom. Why would I want a washbasin that costs 2000 to 3000 euros? I don’t want to keep it for 20 to 30 years just because it was too expensive to replace after 15 years. I’d rather choose something more affordable (of course, probably not as high quality) and replace it with a new, modern one at some point.

We chose a (modern) standard bathtub and toilet. The more modern toilet was supposed to cost 800 euros extra, but I barely noticed any visual difference. Also, I didn’t want a rimless toilet because there is supposed to be more splashing.

For the sake of completeness:

We actually held back.
3 x rimless toilets (each with an additional cost of 200€),
1 x rain shower coming from the ceiling (850€),
Vanity unit 180cm (71 inches) with 2 above-counter basins Villeroy & Boch Artis and base cabinet with drawers, plus a backlit mirror (6,000€ WTF),
Vanity unit 90cm (35 inches) with above-counter basin, base cabinet with drawer (2,500€ WTF)

In the end, both vanity units were completely removed from the delivery scope. Instead, we will have custom, high-quality furniture made, and faucets, basins, and mirrors will be purchased online for half the price.

In total, this saves us 3,500 - 4,000€.

Outrageous additional charges. Our plumber charged us a flat 1000 for a washbasin with 2 drawers and a mirrored cabinet with LED lighting, and that was for good-quality products. However, I bought the mirrored cabinet for the guest bathroom from an online retailer for only 75, also with lighting and of good quality. Installed it myself, done.
