Hi everyone,

On Thursday, we have the bathroom selection appointment. Just thinking about it makes me a bit anxious because my wife said that bathrooms are her area of expertise and she wants to choose everything there.

Well, what tips can you give me to make sure it doesn’t get out of hand?

We are dealing with 3 bathrooms, which include the following fixtures:
- 3 toilets
- 3 walk-in showers (1 rain shower, 2 standard)
- 2 single washbasins
- 1 double washbasin
- 1 bathtub
- other accessories

I have already read through some threads. My plan is to buy the ceramics, drain channels, and fittings from the plumber and to source and install the following myself:
- mirror / mirrored cabinet
- furniture
- electric towel warmer
- towel rails
- toilet paper holder
- toilet brush holder

Do you have any further ideas or (insider) tips on where to get the listed items well and affordably?

Best regards

With short pipe lengths in a single-family home, a very consistent hot water temperature is achieved after a short time. Once you remember the mixer setting, it’s good forever.

Regarding the bathtub: the thermostat controls the temperature at the faucet, not inside the tub. For medical baths, you cannot avoid measuring the temperature in the filled tub. Then you adjust with cold or hot water until the actual bath temperature is right.

Well then: off you go to save energy.

But I was actually thinking of separate knobs for cold and hot water. They still exist, just like the simple mixer.

Ideal Standard is also a more affordable brand that offers good value for money and isn’t just boring or generic. The selection isn’t very large, but still worth checking out.

Possibly consider doing faucets, mirrors, and lighting as a DIY project.

Are you visiting a bathroom showroom? Our general contractor no longer goes there by default. Too many bathrooms that were further downgraded after the initial selection. Bathrooms require a bit of a Nordlys mindset. The same water comes from a 60-euro (about 65-dollar) faucet as from a rain turbo massage showerhead. It doesn’t clean any worse or better.

I would think ahead about how much luxury you want to allow for the bathrooms and what is really necessary. Do you need a freestanding bathtub with a whirlpool function for two people if you mainly shower and the tub is only included so the house has one?

With long hair, the rainfall shower may be less effective; the flow spreads out widely (but with high volume!), making it difficult to rinse out shampoo thoroughly.

Therefore, having a second standard handheld showerhead nearby as a backup is advisable.

Otherwise:
General contractor plumbing prices are roughly double the usual online prices. Freestanding builder’s hardware fixtures can easily be priced around 2,000 (currency), which is more expensive than the builder’s hardware itself.
Costs of 10,000 to 15,000 (currency) can quickly add up. Keep in mind, the bathroom is usually already paid for in the base price...

Don’t take on too much at once! In other words: be satisfied if you manage to choose the tiles in one day and arrange a separate appointment for items like toilet paper holders and similar fixtures, if possible.

If you want to organize the furniture yourself, this might argue against countertop basins. We chose countertop basins for wall mounting, which were installed by the plumber, and the base cabinet came about six months later, when we had the time and interest to focus on design, contractors, and decisions again.

My wife wants to choose... Any tips on how to keep things from getting out of hand? I was bothered by how you describe your wife! Like a luxury lady who picks everything without asking about the price because the husband will pay anyway. Wouldn't it be more honest if both of you agreed on a budget through discussion before selecting materials, then see how far you can go? Almost everything in the bathroom area is overpriced, unless you go to Ikea. If you find something you like there and add the assembly service, it still comes out fairly priced. Ideal faucets are good. Duravit D Code is a nice and affordable porcelain series. Tiles should be 60cm by 30cm (24 inches by 12 inches), no larger. My wife needs thermostatic mixers, I don’t.

We bought the small stuff on Amazon—things like Grohe hooks, towel holders, etc. That saves a lot. They tried to sell us toilet seats that close softly with silicone dampers. What nonsense. Anyone can close the lid gently without it breaking! K.
