Hello everyone!

We are preparing to move this summer.
As a temporary solution until our new home is ready, we will be staying for one year in a very old house.
The house has been in the family for a long time but will likely be sold rather than renovated by us, so none of us want to invest much money into it.
However, the current situation in the small bathrooms is something I cannot live with – not even for one year.
So, for me, this is the moment to start doing some DIY work. It’s a good project to experiment with since it can hardly get any worse than it is now. 😉

Bathroom with orange-brown tiles, bathtub, toilet and sloped ceiling.

My question to you: Who has experience or tips on improving the look of very old bathrooms with a limited budget?
Our goal is to repaint the bathtub and at least paint or cover the wall tiles.
For the floor, I would like something with a wood appearance – maybe vinyl could be installed over it?
These are just rough ideas. I’m thankful for any input or inspiration.

This is just one of two bathrooms. This will probably be our “toilet room,” as the shower/tub is unlikely to be used. There is another bathroom of the same size, for which I don’t have pictures yet, with sanitary fixtures in an unpleasant curry brown. I would like to change the color of the sinks there, but I have no idea if that’s possible.
We will probably replace the toilets in both bathrooms before moving in.

Last but not least:
This old kitchen will become our laundry room. Now we need to figure out how to connect a washing machine where the sink is currently located. Is that doable? It’s not absolutely necessary to keep the sink functional, but it would be nice. If so, what would we need to do and acquire?

Kitchen with wood-colored cabinets, retro yellow-green floral wallpaper, stove, sink and dish rack.

I think at the hardware store starting with O it was around the middle back then. There is always laminate flooring available for about 5-6€ (around $5-6), but also some priced around 30€ (around $30). We got ours cheaper than the listed price because we bought a large quantity. The sign said 18 (or maybe it was 17 or so), but that wasn’t what we paid. It was just mentioned for orientation. And of course, this was already 5 years ago. In this case, I would buy discounted material, even if it might not be the first choice. For a short period, that's acceptable. Back then, I also paid attention to the total thickness as well as the thickness of the wear layer. In this case, that wouldn’t be as important, so it could be a millimeter thinner sometimes. For us, it was intended as a permanent solution, so that was more important. There is definitely room to save here as well.

Just had a quick look: Online, the mentioned hardware store currently offers a range from 4.99 to 28.99€/m² (around $5 to $29/sq. yd.).

I’m really surprised that vinyl is more expensive than laminate.
I have already found quite a few affordable laminate options. I’m definitely leaning toward a budget-friendly product since we won’t be living there for very long anyway.
Vinyl looked so easy to cut in our house. It seemed like you just scored it and snapped it, and that was it. I hope laminate is just as easy to work with. Is underlay for soundproofing mandatory under laminate?

Technically no, but I would still do it. Especially in older buildings, the floor is not perfectly level, so this helps a bit. Technically, leveling compound would be correct, but you don’t want that much effort.

When searching for affordable laminate flooring, I often come across brands like "Haro," "Hori," "Kronotex," and "Meister." Has anyone here installed laminate from any of these brands and can share their experience?

I’ve noticed some products from these brands are heavily discounted at times. Can I assume that the quality and ease of installation are consistent across the brand’s range, or are there significant differences within their product lines?

There is also a shop called "Floor24" offering laminate flooring at low prices. However, they don’t have a review system and seem to sell private label products, so it’s hard to get a clear idea of the quality. Does anyone have experience with products from this store?

I’ve seen that Tedox, for example, offers laminate below the 10€ (around $11) mark, but these tend to have generally poor reviews. Because of this, I’m considering excluding them from my options.

Unfortunately, I have no experience with the brands mentioned above. However, regarding heavily discounted branded products in general, this often happens during product range changes and is not an indicator of lower quality (even within the brand portfolio) but rather a reflection of limited storage space at wholesalers, retailers, and manufacturers.
So, it can be a good opportunity.
The only downside is that you might not be able to get another package next year if you want to fix issues like unnoticed orange juice damage or the consequences of the kid using mom’s drill...

Well, that would really be irrelevant for us. If I wanted to be completely safe, I could buy an extra pack. But in our case, the entire scope is only about 1.5 years +/- a few months. Therefore, the heavily discounted branded product would probably be a good choice for us.
