Hello everyone!

We are preparing to move this summer.
As a temporary solution until our new home is ready, we will be staying for one year in a very old house.
The house has been in the family for a long time but will likely be sold rather than renovated by us, so none of us want to invest much money into it.
However, the current situation in the small bathrooms is something I cannot live with – not even for one year.
So, for me, this is the moment to start doing some DIY work. It’s a good project to experiment with since it can hardly get any worse than it is now. 😉

Bathroom with orange-brown tiles, bathtub, toilet and sloped ceiling.

My question to you: Who has experience or tips on improving the look of very old bathrooms with a limited budget?
Our goal is to repaint the bathtub and at least paint or cover the wall tiles.
For the floor, I would like something with a wood appearance – maybe vinyl could be installed over it?
These are just rough ideas. I’m thankful for any input or inspiration.

This is just one of two bathrooms. This will probably be our “toilet room,” as the shower/tub is unlikely to be used. There is another bathroom of the same size, for which I don’t have pictures yet, with sanitary fixtures in an unpleasant curry brown. I would like to change the color of the sinks there, but I have no idea if that’s possible.
We will probably replace the toilets in both bathrooms before moving in.

Last but not least:
This old kitchen will become our laundry room. Now we need to figure out how to connect a washing machine where the sink is currently located. Is that doable? It’s not absolutely necessary to keep the sink functional, but it would be nice. If so, what would we need to do and acquire?

Kitchen with wood-colored cabinets, retro yellow-green floral wallpaper, stove, sink and dish rack.

Regarding kitchen appliances – check what is available for quick delivery or be prepared for long wait times. Our dishwasher order was just canceled for the second time, and the model we ordered now is expected to be delivered in September. My cousin currently has to use her wine cooler for food storage because the side-by-side fridge she ordered in December might only arrive sometime in summer.

Oh my goodness :O We don’t have high demands there yet, but these are useful tips.

If necessary, I would take the current refrigerator with me. 🙂

I would have also recommended the colors from misspompadour.

Last year, we considered buying an older house and came across the brand’s chalk paints. I looked into it a bit, saw some before-and-after comparisons, and thought it was pretty good.
However, we don’t have any practical experience with it since we ultimately didn’t buy the house.

Aside from that, I completely understand not wanting to leave it as is, even for a year—I wouldn’t either.
If you don’t feel comfortable, a year is a pretty long time.

We have laminate flooring throughout the entire house, which I believe cost around 18€/m2 (about $17 per square yard) at the hardware store. We have been satisfied with it for 5 years. It was a mid-range price and looks quite stylish. Our laminate is extra wide, so it resembles wooden planks. Under the sofa, you can see some scratches from feet, but apart from that, everything is completely fine despite having a dog, two cats, and two children. When choosing laminate, make sure the matching baseboards (also called skirting boards) are not too expensive.

18 EUR/m² is quite expensive for laminate flooring, in my opinion. We paid 12 EUR/m² – by the way, our planks were also extra wide.
