Hello everyone!

We are preparing to move this summer.
As a temporary solution until our new home is ready, we will be staying for one year in a very old house.
The house has been in the family for a long time but will likely be sold rather than renovated by us, so none of us want to invest much money into it.
However, the current situation in the small bathrooms is something I cannot live with – not even for one year.
So, for me, this is the moment to start doing some DIY work. It’s a good project to experiment with since it can hardly get any worse than it is now. 😉

Bathroom with orange-brown tiles, bathtub, toilet and sloped ceiling.

My question to you: Who has experience or tips on improving the look of very old bathrooms with a limited budget?
Our goal is to repaint the bathtub and at least paint or cover the wall tiles.
For the floor, I would like something with a wood appearance – maybe vinyl could be installed over it?
These are just rough ideas. I’m thankful for any input or inspiration.

This is just one of two bathrooms. This will probably be our “toilet room,” as the shower/tub is unlikely to be used. There is another bathroom of the same size, for which I don’t have pictures yet, with sanitary fixtures in an unpleasant curry brown. I would like to change the color of the sinks there, but I have no idea if that’s possible.
We will probably replace the toilets in both bathrooms before moving in.

Last but not least:
This old kitchen will become our laundry room. Now we need to figure out how to connect a washing machine where the sink is currently located. Is that doable? It’s not absolutely necessary to keep the sink functional, but it would be nice. If so, what would we need to do and acquire?

Kitchen with wood-colored cabinets, retro yellow-green floral wallpaper, stove, sink and dish rack.

Do you think it would be possible to install click laminate flooring over carpet if the carpet is thoroughly deep cleaned first? I’ve seen products like that for around €6 / m² (about $6.50 / sq ft). That should be fine for one year.
Sure, I did the same at my mother’s house 15 years ago. There was no smell at all...

We also need a kitchen or kitchenette upstairs. I’m currently looking for DIY ideas or second-hand options on classified ads.
Alternatively, we could spend around 4,000 € (about 4,400 USD) to get one from IKEA. We’re torn. On one hand, it feels like a waste of money for just 1 to 1.5 years. On the other hand, we cook every day, and dealing with the worst makeshift solutions during that time isn’t great either. If it were only 2 months, sure, but over a year is quite a bit of life.

You can create countertop space and storage with little money or existing items—there are hundreds of systems at IKEA, and with a bit of creativity, you can make it look nice. The problem is that we need appliances.
A refrigerator (a freestanding fridge would be possible), a cooktop and extractor hood, and a sink are the minimum.

There are plenty of used kitchens available on classified sites. I wouldn’t buy new for just one year.

I check from time to time, but the ones I find are either completely worn out for €600, or if they look decent, they want €2000 and then say the fridge and dishwasher are not included. 🙄
But yes – I’m currently looking more actively. If I’m lucky, something suitable will come up. Otherwise, I might have to increase the search radius a bit.

But yes – I’m looking more often recently. Hopefully something reasonable will come up. Otherwise, I might have to widen the search area a bit.

You’ll definitely find something. Prices are usually negotiable, even if not stated. If you find something you like, keep an eye on it. And if it stays listed for a while, ask for a good price.

That said, I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on it looking especially nice if you’re only renting or using it for a year. For just one year, in the bathroom I wouldn’t do much except maybe replace the sink and toilet.

Please pay attention to the delivery times for kitchens at Ikea. You don’t want the kitchen to arrive months later when you are already packing up again.

I would definitely get rid of the carpets. The cheapest option would probably be a PVC floor or a cheap carpet, as already mentioned here.

If there is a smell, then in any case, get rid of it. You don’t even know what else might be living in there. Flea pupae and eggs can survive for many years without a host...
