Hello everyone,

I am currently considering the idea of using BILLY shelves without the original back panel—mainly because I want to stay flexible with the dimensions of my wall and prefer a more open, airy look. However, I am concerned about stability since the back panel is actually responsible for reinforcement.

My question: Are there practical options or solutions to keep BILLY shelves stable and secure without the back panel? What methods or accessories would you recommend? I am interested in both simple, quick fixes as well as more elaborate solutions that really hold up.

It is important to me that the shelves are stable and do not tip or wobble, especially when loaded with books or similar items.

Looking forward to your experiences and ideas!

You can attach the shelf directly to the wall using screws, which significantly increases stability.

Often, this is enough to serve as a substitute for a back panel. Otherwise, install metal brackets in the corners. Done.

That’s true, but I sometimes find it challenging if the wall isn’t perfectly even. So, I tried installing additional narrow metal braces on the back side, basically inside the shelf frame.

This provides extra support without affecting the appearance too much. It helped me make the shelf more secure without having to add a back panel.

Sometimes, the open design also worries me regarding tipping risks, especially with children or pets around. So I wonder if there might be other, less visible solutions, maybe accessories from IKEA as an option?

Yes, that’s completely understandable! 🙂

Here’s a tip for you: use special brackets to secure the shelf to the wall at the top and always store heavier items at the bottom. This practically eliminates the risk of tipping! You can also cleverly add small wooden slats or acrylic strips that are barely noticeable but significantly improve stability.

This is really great if you definitely don’t want a back panel!!! 🙂 Just give it a try – I’ve had excellent results, and the shelf stays rock solid!
