Hello everyone,
I am planning to add a back panel to my KALLAX shelf and would like to know if there are ways to specifically reinforce these back panels. Experience shows that the original back panels are often very thin and unstable, which can cause problems, especially when the shelf is fully loaded.
I am particularly interested in whether the stability and strength can be significantly increased using additional materials or other techniques, without affecting the design or making assembly more difficult. If anyone has tips on fastening methods, reinforcements with plywood, metal braces, or similar DIY solutions, please share!
Thanks in advance!

Alternatively, attach wooden battens to the edges to provide stability. However, when driving screws into the carcass, be careful to avoid damage.

How does it look when an additional panel is attached at the back?In my opinion, it doesn’t look bulky at all if the panel is neatly cut and either painted or kept in the original color.
I kept it simple, using raw and painted plywood, and it actually looks quite professional. It really adds stability to the shelf without standing out negatively.

You can match the back panel’s color or even cover it with thin veneer foilThat’s exactly what I did—it was easy and enjoyable! You’ll see, the extra effort is worth it! 🙂
