Hello everyone,

I am planning to add a back panel to my KALLAX shelf and would like to know if there are ways to specifically reinforce these back panels. Experience shows that the original back panels are often very thin and unstable, which can cause problems, especially when the shelf is fully loaded.

I am particularly interested in whether the stability and strength can be significantly increased using additional materials or other techniques, without affecting the design or making assembly more difficult. If anyone has tips on fastening methods, reinforcements with plywood, metal braces, or similar DIY solutions, please share!

Thanks in advance!

It’s great that you bring up this topic! 🙂

I reinforced my KALLAX last year for exactly this reason, because the back panel is really thin and tends to bend easily. What worked well for me was simply screwing a plywood board of the right size onto the back. This gives the entire shelf a much more solid backbone!

The key is to measure the panel precisely beforehand and not to place the screws too close to the edges.

The best part: this keeps the assembly simple, and you immediately notice the difference in stability. Definitely give it a try!!

Screw a plywood or MDF board behind the back wall.

Alternatively, metal brackets can be installed as reinforcement.

This is sufficient for normal use.

I completely understand how important it is for the back panel to be sturdy – I myself have often felt unsure whether my shelf could actually support the weight plus my belongings.

That sounds great, I think that’s exactly the approach I’m going to take as well.

However, I’m still curious: How does it affect the appearance when an additional panel is attached at the back? Is it relatively unobtrusive or does it look quite bulky? I would really appreciate your experience with this.

At first, I also had concerns about the appearance. Especially when the shelf stands freely in the room, I find a thick back panel distracting.

You can customize the color of the back panel or even cover it with a thin veneer foil. My advice: Instead of a 12 mm (0.47 inch) plywood panel, use a 6 mm (0.24 inch) one. It still provides plenty of stability but looks less bulky. You can also use screw caps to cover the screws.

This way, it looks clean and sturdy at the same time.

To increase the stability of KALLAX back panels, the following methods are generally effective:

1. Use wood panels between 6 and 12 mm thick (1/4 to 1/2 inch), such as plywood or MDF, for reinforcement. These panels can be screwed or glued to the back side.
2. Add metal brackets or steel profiles at the corners to improve rear bracing.
3. Use rear battens to provide additional support to the back panel and reduce deformation.

It is important to ensure that the reinforcement is precisely fitted to the KALLAX unit to avoid stresses.

A uniform appearance can be achieved by painting or laminating the reinforcement panels.

These recommendations are based on multiple DIY experiences and effectively enhance load capacity.
