Hello everyone,

I am looking for effective tips on cleaning Ikea Hemnes furniture using natural products. Specifically, I want to care for the surfaces without resorting to harsh chemicals, as I am sensitive to synthetic cleaning agents and value sustainability. The Hemnes series I own has a typical, somewhat porous surface, which makes cleaning a bit challenging, especially with tougher stains or greasy marks.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations on natural remedies suitable for cleaning and maintaining this furniture? I am interested in dosage, application methods, potential risks, or special considerations to avoid damaging or discoloring the surface.

I look forward to your helpful tips and am curious about any tried-and-tested products or methods you can recommend!

Hello @ottilieplo,

I’d be happy to provide you with a simple step-by-step guide on how to clean your Hemnes furniture naturally and gently.

- First, remove dust using a soft, dry cloth or a microfiber cloth to avoid scratches.
- For light dirt, I recommend a solution of warm water with a small amount of mild soap or traditional bar soap. Wipe the surfaces gently with this, using a damp cloth rather than a wet one.
- For tougher stains, a mixture of white vinegar and water (1:2) works very well. Vinegar breaks down grease and dirt without causing lasting damage.
- To neutralize any vinegar residue and give the surface a slight conditioning effect, you can finish by applying some oil—just a few drops of linseed oil or walnut oil on a soft cloth, applying it thinly. Don’t use too much to avoid unsightly marks.
- Be cautious when using lemon juice or other strongly acidic agents, as these can dull the surface.

A common mistake is wiping the furniture too wet. The wood should only be cleaned with a damp cloth to prevent swelling or discoloration.

Summary:
- Remove dust
- Wipe damp with bar soap solution
- Use vinegar solution for grease stains
- Lightly oil at the end

I hope these tips help you!

Oh yes, I totally agree! With Hemnes, I would be really careful using acidic products. But if you want to remove a light greasy film, a simple mixture of water, a little baking soda, and a splash of vinegar often works wonders.

- Just make a paste and apply it to the stain
- Let it sit briefly (not too long)
- Wipe off with a damp cloth

And if you finish with a few drops of olive oil, the wood will look fresh and beautiful again.

Whether natural remedies or not – a little gentle manual care always helps. 😉

As a supplement, I would like to point out two important aspects:

- The Hemnes furniture is made of solid pine wood with a lacquer or stain finish. This means that aggressive or overly wet cleaning agents can damage the protective layer.
- Vinegar/water solutions are suitable for superficial dirt but should be used sparingly and not too often to avoid harming the finish.

Recommendation:

- Use a soft, non-abrasive cloth.
- Damp wiping with pH-neutral soap bar or soft soap is acceptable.
- Do not use abrasive sponges or strongly acidic cleaners.
- Occasional re-oiling with a very mild, plant-based oil (e.g., linseed oil) can help maintain and protect the surface.

Be aware that excessive moisture can cause the wood to swell, leading to distortions. Therefore, always use only slightly damp cloths and dry the furniture afterward.

These notes are based on the material properties of the Hemnes series and practical experience.
