Hello everyone,

I plan to set up several IKEA Billy bookcases in my home office. The problem is that the floor there is not completely even – there are slight uneven spots, which makes the bookcase unstable. Are there any proven tips or specific methods to securely and permanently install a Billy bookcase on an uneven floor? I want to avoid the bookcase wobbling or leaning later on, and of course, it should also look reasonably neat. Technical solutions or installation tips that work well for minor floor irregularities would be ideal. Thanks in advance!

Thank you, kaubi, the tips about materials are helpful.

The floor is a wood-look vinyl covering, which unfortunately wasn’t installed completely flat – so some unevenness feels a bit soft in certain spots, I estimate about a 5mm (0.2 inches) difference over roughly 80cm (31 inches) in length.

For floors that are not just slightly uneven but wavy, it’s advisable to use a custom-made leveling board.

That unfortunately sounds like a good solution I hadn’t considered before. Especially with vinyl flooring, it’s important not to cause any damage – and having rubber or felt pads under almost every foot would be ideal.

Felt pads not only protect the floor from scratches but also dampen slight unevenness

I’ll look for combined furniture glides with felt surfaces then. It would be great if they’re also height-adjustable, otherwise I’d have to use washers to compensate.

Does anyone have advice on how to fix the leveling board to the vinyl floor with minimal damage? Gluing is problematic and screwing is out of the question...

Hello everyone,

I have often placed furniture on uneven floors and find the discussion here very interesting.

Regarding Juttakin’s question about how to secure a leveling panel on a vinyl floor without gluing or drilling: a good method is not to firmly fix the panel but to use a reliable non-slip material.

For example, you can use non-slip rubber mats designed for carpets, which can be placed between the floor and the leveling panel. These prevent slipping without damaging the floor – they are thin, flexible, and provide good grip.

Also, allowing the panel to slip is not an optimal long-term solution – so place the mat under the panel, then put the shelving unit on top, and additionally secure the shelving unit to the wall.

This way, you have stability without drilling into the floor or using adhesives.

Otherwise, I can confirm that adjustable furniture feet with felt or rubber caps are a great addition, especially for minor unevenness.

I hope this helps!
