MUDIANHello everyone, I have a question about a small but annoying issue with my IKEA KALLAX shelves. After purchasing, adhesive residue from the price tags remained on the surface of the shelves. I would like to know if this adhesive residue can be removed from the KALLAX furniture without damaging the surface. I am especially interested in which products or home remedies work best to gently remove the adhesive residue and whether there are any recommended cleaning methods or products for the finish or material of the KALLAX. Does anyone have experience or tips? Thanks in advance!
Hey MUDIAN, it’s great that you brought up this topic! :-) Glue residues can often be removed effectively with some patience. I found that starting with warm water and a mild dish soap works best to soften the labels on my KALLAX shelves. Then, gently peel them off using a soft cloth or your fingernail – it works really well! If any residue remains, cleaning alcohol or a little baby oil can sometimes help. But be careful not to use anything too harsh, as it can damage the surface. 🙂 Definitely avoid scraping with sharp tools! Good luck, and let us know how it goes after you try it!

sometimes rubbing alcohol or a little baby oilI agree. Rubbing alcohol usually works very well; just soak a cloth and gently wipe. Do not rub, as it can dull the finish.
For clarification: KALLAX surfaces are usually melamine-coated, which makes them durable but not completely resistant. Therefore, I would advise against solvents such as acetone or nail polish remover, as they can damage the surface. The safest options are special adhesive residue removers designed for furniture, or gentle household remedies like olive oil or a mixture of dish soap and warm water. It is important to wipe the treated area afterward with a damp cloth to remove any residue. Testing on an inconspicuous spot is always recommended.
I can totally understand how annoying these glue residues on a nice piece of furniture like KALLAX can be. 🙂 I’ve tried removing label residues myself and find it especially frustrating when the surface underneath gets damaged. Back then, I patiently waited for the adhesive to become brittle on its own, then gently rubbed it off with an eraser – this surprisingly worked very well and was very gentle. Maybe this could be an option for you too? The key is not to get frustrated and to proceed carefully, bit by bit – it’s better to work briefly and often than to rub hard all at once. If that doesn’t work, you could try using things like oil or rubbing alcohol, but keep a close eye on the surface while doing so. Good luck, and if you keep us updated, we’re happy to support you further!
