Hello forum,

I just wanted to quickly ask about your experience with aluminum insulating foils for underfloor heating. I’m considering two options:

- Inexpensive foil with a grid pattern bought online, and

- Foil with woven tape from the installer, also with a grid pattern (costs almost twice as much as the online one)

Basically, the foil will be laid on 3 cm EPS (1.2 inches). On top of that will be 3 mm (0.12 inches) wire mesh mats, where the clips and finally the pipes will be attached (so no "piercing" of the foil). Therefore, I wonder if it really is necessary to use the foil with woven tape when the pipes are fixed to the mesh mats. Also, I’m interested in how "fragile" the inexpensive insulating foils from the internet are. Do they tear easily with any careless step?

Hello Joho,

before you bring in a "internet vapor barrier," why not ask the installer if they will still provide the corresponding warranty for the installation work when using it? Because I find it hard to believe.

The installer doesn’t really mind, since we are using the clip system with wire mesh mats. The screed installer also said that it doesn’t matter as long as the vapor barrier isn’t punctured too often, which is the case here, because, for example, we won’t be using fastening methods with hooks (i.e., fastening the pipes by hooking through the vapor barrier into the EPS).
