ᐅ One 5-meter window or multiple smaller windows?

Hello,

We have two large windows in the stairwell (northwest side), each 2.0m (6.6 feet) wide and 2.5m (8.2 feet) high, currently with roller shutters. We now want to install blinds to better control the light and privacy. Our general contractor suggested that instead of two separate windows with blinds, we could combine them into one window measuring 5m (16.4 feet) wide and 2m (6.6 feet) high.

Advantage: it would be somewhat cheaper than having two windows with blinds (about €300). It would probably look great too, such a large window. We are now wondering about the pros and cons.

The staircase will be a half-landing staircase. I thought having two windows would allow better control of light, for example, keeping the top one open and the bottom one closed. But what other advantages or disadvantages do you see? Also regarding maintenance and follow-up costs, for example if a blind gets damaged.

Oh, one disadvantage of the 5m window would be that the escape route would be slightly smaller. This means compared to the other windows on either side, there would be a 10cm (4 inches) offset, so it wouldn't line up perfectly. This is due to the 5m blind. I think this wouldn't bother us much since it's on the northwest side anyway.

So, how would you decide and why?
Looking forward to your opinions.

You said the window faces northwest, so shading isn’t the main issue but rather privacy. Since blinds have the advantage that you can hardly see in but can still look out reasonably well when they are slightly tilted, I would say it doesn’t really matter whether you can tilt the top and bottom sections separately, because you will probably keep both at about the same angle anyway.

With a single blind, you also have the option to lower only part of it, allowing you to control the shading.

With two separate blinds, you have to operate two controls, and in the end, the top and bottom probably won’t be tilted the same way (purely aesthetic, but I find it nicer when it’s even).

At our company, for example, we use two divided blinds, which allows excellent control of both shading and privacy.
