ᐅ How can I make the best use of IKEA HEMNES furniture in small bedrooms?

NabizarHello everyone, I recently started furnishing my small bedroom with furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series, but I keep running into the challenge of making the most out of the very limited available space. My bedroom is about 8 square meters (86 square feet), with high ceilings but little floor space. So, I’m wondering: How can I arrange IKEA Hemnes furniture to optimize both storage and comfort?
I’m thinking, for example, about special combinations of wardrobe, bed, and chest of drawers, possibly also clever use of space under the bed or on wall surfaces. It’s important to me that the solution is not only functional but also doesn’t feel overwhelming visually. Has anyone had practical experience with which Hemnes pieces work best and how to arrange them, especially in small rooms? Thanks in advance for tips and insights!

First, a general consideration: IKEA HEMNES furniture is visually appealing and sturdy, but its bulkiness can be an issue in small rooms.
This is exactly the challenge. The high ceilings offer an opportunity to create vertical storage, but the HEMNES system is relatively bulky. Therefore, furniture with a smaller footprint but greater height should be preferred and used as multifunctionally as possible.
My advice: Use a tall HEMNES wardrobe that reaches the ceiling and combine it with low dressers. Avoid large bed frames if possible; under-bed storage boxes from IKEA (e.g., SKUBB) might be helpful.
By the way, have you checked if a HEMNES bed with drawers works well on the floor? It can provide storage but requires space to open the drawers. Depending on the room layout, a mid-height bed with usable space underneath may be a better option than a traditional bed frame.

Hello Nabizar! I really like this topic, and I recently furnished my small apartment with HEMNES furniture myself. Your idea to use the space as efficiently as possible is great! 🙂
Absolutely right! I can only recommend going for tall cabinets or shelves from the HEMNES series that you can place almost up to the ceiling. This makes the room feel bigger because you make use of the height—and you can store items you rarely use at the very top.
I also installed wall hooks and small shelves to use the wall space above the bed or dresser. This gives you additional open storage that doesn’t clutter the room, and at the same time, the room feels much cozier!
And a tip: if you combine the bed with a HEMNES chest at the foot end, you get another great option for storing blankets or clothes. Good luck—I’m sure it will turn out great!

I understand the challenge very well, as I have also struggled with a small room where I used HEMNES furniture. At first, I was unsure if the size of the furniture would feel overwhelming, but it turned out to be quite the opposite.
The key, as mentioned, is to make good use of vertical space.
That helped me a lot, not only to create more storage but also to display personal items and decorations – which makes the space feel more welcoming.
Additionally, I would suggest placing the bed as close to a wall as possible, so you can better zone the room and avoid unnecessary walkways.
If you are using a wardrobe from the HEMNES series, it might be better to choose one or two wider wardrobes instead of several smaller ones to create a tidier look. This also makes the room appear larger. If possible, add a slim chest of drawers, which fits well under windows or in narrow niches.
