Hello everyone, I have purchased some Malm furniture from IKEA to furnish the children's room. However, I am concerned about how to make these pieces as child-friendly as possible since the sharp edges and potentially unstable parts are a problem for me in everyday life with toddlers.
I am particularly interested in which measures and practical modifications you would recommend to make Malm dressers, beds, or cabinets safe and functional for small children without completely losing the style.
Are there proven protective devices, alternative handles, anchors, or other solutions to prevent tipping or injury? I want to avoid having to improvise later, as safety and everyday usability are the top priorities.
Do you have any experience or tips you can share? Thanks in advance for your answers!

Safety with Malm furniture can be effectively improved through the following measures...Thank you for the detailed information, FEKAU! I particularly appreciate that you mentioned the quality and non-toxicity of edge protection. I have noticed that often cheap materials are used there, which I want to avoid.
One more question: What do you think about special storage solutions for Malm dressers, especially when it comes to toys? Are boxes or organizers inside the drawers useful to reduce clutter while still maintaining safety?

I use colorful fabric storage boxes inside our Malm drawers, sized exactly to fit the drawer compartments. They not only help with organizing but also protect the interior surfaces and are easy to clean.
Besides, this way the kids can find their toys faster – and tidying up even becomes fun!
Make sure to choose sturdy boxes so they don’t tip over, and avoid boxes that are too large; then it works perfectly.

Are boxes or organizers useful in drawers to reduce clutter?Definitely yes! I recommend modular organizer systems made of plastic or wood that fit the drawers precisely. These help keep things tidy, prevent small items from shifting, and improve overall visibility.
It is important to avoid using materials that are too heavy, so the drawers remain easy to open.
Additionally, removable inserts are convenient when you need to clean quickly.
As an additional safety measure, you should equip the drawers with soft-close dampers if you have small children. This helps prevent finger injuries.
I also recommend using only non-toxic paints or varnishes when modifying or upholstering the furniture. Children are sensitive to odors and harmful substances.
Regarding your questions about storage: flexible compartments or fabric boxes work well, especially if they are easy to clean.
It is also important to regularly check the furniture for stability and to ensure that the wall fixings are still securely attached.

It’s also important to make it playful: colorful boxes in different sizes, a few stickers or child-friendly labels help a lot. The more the little ones can have a say, the better it works.
