Hello everyone,

I own a Malm bedside table from IKEA that unfortunately got slightly damaged during a recent move. Specifically, a corner on the front left side came loose, and since then the drawer sticks a bit when opening. Since the furniture is made of particleboard and laminate, I am a bit concerned about the best and most durable way to repair it without leaving visible marks or glue residues.

Does anyone here have experience or tips on how to securely reattach the corner without ruining the appearance of the furniture? And how can I make the drawer slide smoothly again? Which materials do you think are best suited for repairing particleboard?

Thanks in advance for all your advice!

Hello jolo60,

First of all, it is important to carefully assess the damaged area. In the case of a detached corner on the MALM nightstand, it is usually the laminate surface that has come loose from the particleboard, which is definitely repairable.

I can recommend the following: Use a waterproof wood glue suitable for laminate or a special furniture adhesive, applied thinly with a small brush. Then press the corner firmly and secure it with clamps or heavy books until the glue is fully cured – this can take up to 24 hours. It is important to ensure that no glue gets on the surface, as this will cause unsightly stains.

Regarding the drawer issue: Often, sticking occurs due to dirty or bent drawer tracks. Cleaning the tracks and treating them lightly with a dry lubricant designed for plastics (e.g., silicone spray) can help, provided it does not leave a greasy residue. Oil on metal is usually not ideal for IKEA furniture.

Be careful when applying the glue – use only a small amount and do so very precisely, otherwise it will look messy.

I hope this helps you make good progress!

Simply apply a thin layer of wood glue, join the corner, and clamp it. For the drawer, use a small amount of dry lubricant suitable for plastics, not oil. Done.

Additional information and detailed procedure:

With particleboard furniture like the MALM series, it is important to avoid moisture. Use photovoltaic adhesive (polyvinyl acetate) because it is waterproof and dries clear. Apply the glue precisely to the damaged edge with a fine brush. After pressing it together with a clamp or a strong strap, do not move the furniture piece.

If small paint or finish repairs are needed, special furniture or laminate repair markers can help; these are available in various wood colors.

When storing the drawer, not only clean the sliding rails but also check if the plastic gliders are damaged, as this can also cause jamming. Replacement parts are often available from IKEA or third-party suppliers.

This is the most important step – movement during drying leads to poor results.

If the particleboard has chipped at the corner, you can fill small cracks with wood filler before gluing; this can be lightly sanded after drying.

Overall, the repair should be possible without significant visual drawbacks.

Hello jolo60,

I had almost the same problem with my MALM bedside table. It’s really important not to get any glue on the laminate, as it can discolor or swell.

First, I lightly sanded the area to be glued with some fine sandpaper to help the adhesive stick better, then carefully applied glue with a small brush. I fixed the corner in place using rubber bands that weren’t too tight to avoid damaging the laminate.

What I also recommend: if the corner is very detached, you can glue a very small wooden wedge inside to add stability.

For the drawer, I’ve been using a wax stick (beeswax) on the runners since then, but I apply it sparingly to avoid excess residue.

This helps a lot if there are small holes or splinters.

Good luck with the repair!

One more quick tip regarding the drawer:

If the slide rail is bent or skewed, you can carefully straighten it using pliers and a fine tool before cleaning and lubricating.

It’s also worth checking the screws on the drawer slides and tightening them if necessary, as loose installation often causes jamming.

I also recommend this method, especially if the particle board is really chipped out. This significantly increases the holding strength of the repaired corner.
