Hello everyone,

I am interested in the Brimnes furniture series from Ikea and would like to ask if these pieces are really easy to modify or expand. Specifically, I mean whether it is possible to flexibly combine or alter individual components like shelves, drawers, or carcasses without extensive DIY skills or special tools. Are there any limitations regarding stability or functionality?

Has anyone had experience with how well BRIMNES furniture adapts to different room layouts? I would prefer not to have to replace everything completely after a few months if my needs change.

Looking forward to your opinions and advice!

You can generally expand BRIMNES furniture quite easily because many parts are modular.

However, modifications beyond simple assembly are rather difficult. Drilling, cutting, or custom adjustments are not intended and may compromise stability.

Hello Holgerfa,

I have been a fan of IKEA furniture for quite some time, especially the flexibility of series like BRIMNES. To answer your question in detail:

BRIMNES is actually designed so that the individual modules are compatible and easy to expand—for example, you can easily combine shelving units and drawer elements. The connections usually use standardized dowels, screws, and fittings that are precisely matched.

BUT:
- Custom modifications, such as shortening side panels or adding extra drill holes, require some craftsmanship skills and the right tools.
- A common mistake is overloading or altering the connection points, which compromises stability.
- It is advisable to carefully check whether the new components fit structurally before making modifications.

So if your idea involves not just rearranging but remodeling with cuts, you should proceed with some caution.

Could you please clarify exactly what you want to modify? That way I can give you more targeted advice.

Exactly! Holgerfa, I would say: go ahead and try the BRIMNES furniture! They are really great and very versatile. I’ve assembled a few shelves myself and even modified some drawers – everything worked perfectly! 🙂

It’s really fun to combine the pieces, and you can quickly create a custom solution from a few basic units. If something doesn’t fit, just take it apart and try again. Just be careful when screwing to avoid splitting – then it will hold up really well!

I have a more critical view on that. Just because the pieces appear modular doesn’t necessarily mean they are suitable for every kind of modification.

Many people underestimate the design principles behind such furniture: the connection points, material thicknesses, and load distributions are precisely coordinated.
Anyone who works with cuts or additional openings risks compromising the stability of the furniture or having it no longer fit properly afterwards.

Therefore, my question to Holgerfa: In what way or for what purpose do you want to modify the furniture? Is it more of a flexible rearrangement, or are you planning structural changes to the individual elements?

That would be crucial for assessing the situation.

Hello Holgerfa,

I would like to add some input regarding the planning and modification of BRIMNES furniture:

1. Planning is essential – Ikea instructions are generally designed for standard assembly. If you want to modify the furniture, you should first create a layout with measurements.

2. Extensions are often feasible, as many components are compatible – for example, you can add extra drawers or shelves.

3. Tools and materials tips:
- A cordless drill with adjustable torque is helpful.
- Suitable wood glue and assembly screws for reinforcement during modifications (especially if holes are changed).

4. Be cautious with material thickness:
- BRIMNES usually uses particleboard with a foil coating. When cutting or drilling, make sure to use proper tools to avoid chipping the edges.

5. Stability:
- Major modifications to load-bearing parts can negatively affect stability. In these cases, using additional braces or angle brackets is advisable.

In summary, I would say: yes, you can modify or extend BRIMNES furniture – provided you keep these points in mind. If you like, describe the modifications you are planning in detail – then we can offer more targeted help.
