Hello everyone,

I need your advice regarding the Malm chest of drawers from Ikea. Some of the drawer handles are unfortunately damaged or even broken, so I need to replace them. My question is: What is the best way to replace the Malm drawer handles when they are damaged, without damaging the drawer itself or the surface?

I know the basic procedure, but I’m worried about scratching the inner surfaces or damaging the drawer mechanism when unscrewing the screws. Are there any special tips or tools you would recommend for this?

Also, I’m curious whether it’s better to use original replacement handles or if alternative models are a good option. I would also be interested in experiences regarding whether the mounting screws should always be replaced when changing handles, since I’ve seen that some models have screws of different lengths.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Besim45,

Your question about safely replacing the Malm drawer handles is very well asked, and I am happy to give you a detailed overview.

First: The Malm drawers have the handles attached to the inside of the front panel with two screws. These are usually cross-head screws, which can be easily removed with a suitable screwdriver. Important: Do not overtighten or force the screws to avoid damaging the wood.

To protect the surface, I recommend removing the drawer completely before unscrewing. Then place it on a soft, clean surface, such as a towel. This will help prevent scratches.

If the handles are damaged, check if the screws are rusty or bent. It is often worthwhile to use new screws from a hardware store with a light thread to ensure better durability.

Regarding replacement handles: The original Malm handles fit perfectly, of course, but many people also use compatible handles with the same mounting dimensions. However, make sure that the screw length matches the thickness of the drawer front—usually about 30mm (1.2 inches).

Tools needed:
- Phillips screwdriver size PH2
- Possibly a set of Allen keys (for other handle types)
- Soft pads or cloths for protection

Have you already checked if the existing screws have a special thread? And is the handle attachment material metal or plastic? These details are important to avoid damage.

I’m happy to help further if you provide more details here!

This is a very important point. To add to that: after removing the old handles, it is advisable to carefully clean the screw holes with fine sandpaper if they are damaged or clogged by moisture or dirt.

You should also ensure that the screws are rust-resistant, especially if the furniture is located in a damp environment. Galvanized or stainless steel screws are preferred in this case.

Finally, my tip: to avoid damage later, unscrew the handles with a slight twisting motion, and if the screws are stuck, use a screwdriver with better leverage instead of applying excessive force.

Following this procedure will help preserve the dresser in the long term.

Hi Besim45,

I just want to add that there’s no need to worry—replacing the drawer handles on Malm furniture is easy with a bit of patience! 🙂

I’ve done this several times and find it important to take your time and avoid turning the screws too quickly. Sometimes the screws feel a bit tight, but as long as you keep the screwdriver straight and don’t tilt it, everything will go smoothly.

If you’re unsure, feel free to place a coaster or soft cloth under the drawer, as mentioned before.

Regarding handle selection: I once swapped the handles on my Malm for different ones I found at a hardware store. The key thing is that the hole spacing is the same (usually 128 mm (5 inches) for Malm). Otherwise, the screws won’t fit properly.

About screw replacement: If you buy original handles, the screws are usually included and fit correctly. For third-party handles, check the screw length against the thickness of your drawer front to ensure a proper fit.

Good luck with the replacement, and just reach out if you have any more questions!
