riDorothee9 Jan 2022 18:42Hello everyone,
I am planning to furnish my living room with furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series and want to incorporate LED lighting to both highlight the furniture and create a pleasant atmosphere.
My question is: What is the best way to combine Ikea Hemnes furniture with LED lights without compromising the furniture’s appearance or making the installation unnecessarily complicated?
I am especially interested in practical advice on suitable types of LEDs, installation options (e.g., hidden LED strips, recessed lights, or external solutions), as well as tips about color temperature and brightness that complement the typical wood finishes of the Hemnes series.
I’m not looking for a highly technical explanation, but I would appreciate details on handling, performance, and design that have proven effective, particularly for shelves, dressers, or cabinet-like furniture in this series.
I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Hello riDorothee,
great topic! I recently installed LEDs in a Hemnes display cabinet myself and I can only say: it really makes a difference! 😍
I recommend LED strips because they are flexible and can be attached almost anywhere. Important: choose warm white light (around 2700–3000 Kelvin), which matches the wood tone perfectly and creates a cozy atmosphere.
With self-adhesive strips, the installation is very quick – just attach them inside along the edge, hide the cables, and you’re done!
If you have a bigger budget, recessed lights are also a great option. These can be routed into the shelves or the cabinet body. It requires a bit more effort but looks very professional!
So: keep at it, it’s definitely worth it!

As an addition: When combining Ikea Hemnes furniture with LED lights, several technical and aesthetic factors should be considered.
- 12V LED strips are the most practical and safe option, as they can be easily hidden behind furniture edges.
- The color temperature should ideally be between 2700 and 3000 Kelvin to complement the warm wood appearance of the Hemnes series.
- For shelves and display cabinets, LED puck lights or slim panels are recommended to create focused lighting.
- Ensure good dimming capability to adjust the light intensity according to mood and time of day.
- Power supply is usually external via power adapters; cable management should be neat to avoid disrupting the furniture’s appearance.
Thoughtful planning before installation ensures visually appealing results and prevents mistakes caused by incorrect light color or excessive brightness.

I can recommend LED strips because they are flexible and can be attached almost anywhere. That may be true, but I would advise caution and not base the decision solely on flexibility. Over time, LEDs can cause discoloration of surfaces, especially on wood and lacquered furniture like Hemnes.
Therefore, my question is: Has anyone had experience with the long-term effects of LED lighting on Hemnes? Another aspect is whether the power cables can be kept hidden – there are interesting systems with batteries and remote controls that might simplify things.

The color temperature should ideally be in the range of 2700 to 3000 Kelvin to support the warm wood look of the Hemnes series. I agree with that. Additionally, I would recommend paying attention to a high color rendering index (CRI above 90) to keep the furniture colors looking natural.
Are there any practical solutions here for installing LEDs yourself without modifying the furniture, such as drilling?
I understand the concerns regarding continuous load and potential changes to the furniture.
In a similar project, I used LED strips with low heat generation and mounted them only with a gap—not directly glued to the wood, but attached to thin aluminum profiles. This improves heat dissipation and protects the material.
Regarding invisible cables: it is possible to route the power supply through small cable channels at the back or underneath the furniture, which are hardly noticeable, especially if they are white.
By combining this with a power supply hidden in a drawer or behind the furniture piece, no distracting technical details remain visible.
The advantage of LED lights in the Hemnes series is that the relatively simple furniture surfaces can be highlighted without major modifications. The result is a warm yet modern atmosphere.
However, I would always recommend testing a small area first before installing on a larger scale.
