Hello everyone,

I have a Malm bed frame from Ikea that has recently started to squeak quite annoyingly. The issue is that I have already checked and tightened all the screws several times, but the squeaking persists. My question to the community is: What can I do if the Malm bed frame squeaks even though all the screws are tight? Are there common areas or causes that are not directly related to loose screws? I would like to fix this sustainably without having to do complicated repairs. Thank you in advance for your tips and experiences!

Hello Sionpar,

Thank you for your detailed question. A squeaking MALM bed frame can have several causes, even if all the screws are tight. Often, the squeaking is due to friction between wood and wood or wood and metal, for example at the joints connecting the side panels to the central support or at the slatted frame. A proven method is to lightly treat these contact points with soapy water or a special furniture wax to reduce friction. Alternatively, some Teflon spray or WD-40 can help, but be careful with wooden surfaces to avoid damage.

Have you checked whether the slatted frame itself has any play or if the glides under the legs are squeaking on the floor? Sometimes noises come from the floor rather than directly from the frame.

If you like, I can explain in more detail where to look and how to treat the problem. Good luck!

Sionpar, also check the connection points between the side panels and the top/bottom molding. Often, that is where the problem lies. Simply apply some furniture wax or candle wax there and then press firmly, and the issue should be resolved.

That’s generally correct, but I doubt that lubricants are always the best solution. If moisture gets into the wood, it can cause more damage in the medium term than it prevents. Maybe it’s better to first focus on mechanical causes, for example whether the connecting strips are really tight and flush. Material fatigue could also be a factor. Who knows how many times the bed has been assembled already.

Sionpar, have you checked if any parts might be deformed? Or if a screw is tight but fits in an elongated hole, possibly due to slight wear?

Sionpar,

here is a brief step-by-step guide:

1. Check screws thoroughly, not only for tightness but also for any loosening of the drill holes.
2. Inspect plastic or rubber pads at the support points. If they are missing or damaged, they can cause creaking.
3. Lightly sand all wooden surfaces at the joints if there are any uneven spots or dents.
4. Apply wax (candle wax works best) to these areas, then assemble and press firmly together.
5. Completely check the slatted frame to ensure it sits securely without play or any loose slats rattling.
6. Consider attaching felt pads or non-slip pads under the bed legs – sometimes the noise comes from the floor.

Make sure no parts are installed at an angle during assembly, as this can unnecessarily stress the material. If possible, remove and reassemble each part once to ensure everything fits properly.

If you like, I can provide more details on each step upon request.

Hello,

I had the same problem with a MALM bed. In my case, the spacers and the small wooden dowels had slightly shifted. Even if the screws are tight, these dowels can move a little over time and cause creaking noises.

I carefully removed them, reinserted them using wood glue, and completely reassembled the bed. Since then, it has been completely quiet.

Maybe this tip will help you! 🙂
