Hello everyone,

I recently reassembled my IKEA Malm nightstand after moving and noticed that it now feels a bit wobbly. I followed the assembly instructions carefully and tightened everything as described. My question is: What options are there to improve the stability and safety of the Malm nightstand so that it doesn't wobble and stays securely in place? Are there suitable tools, additional parts, or special solutions I can use to better secure the furniture? I would appreciate any tips, especially if someone has already solved this issue after a move.

Hello Gla43,

First, you should check if all screws and fasteners are properly and fully tightened, as these are the most common causes of wobbling.

Sometimes individual connection points or loose screws can be overlooked. My tip: loosen all screws, reinstall them, and tighten them with a torque that is firm but not too strong to avoid damaging the wood.

Additionally, furniture stoppers or small felt pads under the legs can help compensate for uneven floors. Attaching brackets to the back, if possible, also significantly increases stability.

Summary:
1. Carefully check and retighten screws
2. Use furniture stoppers/felt pads for stability
3. Optional brackets for reinforcement

If you need more details, just ask!

Hi Gla43,

I’m dropping by with a little smile, because a wobbly Malm is a classic after moving :-)

Exactly, and you can get those cheaply at a hardware store. They not only stop your nightstand from wobbling but also protect the floor – so a double win.

What worked well for me too: a bit of hot glue or putty at the points where the furniture touches the floor. Not a permanent fix, but perfect for the initial settling after a move.

And hey, if you want it really stable, you might also consider attaching the table to the wall with small brackets, which gives a reassuring feel.

Good luck, your nightstand will soon be the rock-solid anchor of your bedroom again! ;-)

As an additional note: For IKEA Malm nightstands, the most common cause of wobbling is an uneven floor. Even if all screws are properly tightened, a table can still rock on an uneven surface.

I recommend adjustable furniture feet that can be relatively easily installed underneath. These can be individually adjusted in height to compensate for floor unevenness, ensuring the nightstand stands firmly.

Furthermore, you should check if the back panel of the nightstand is properly installed. The thin cardboard or MDF back panel significantly stabilizes the furniture. If it is damaged or bent, this will negatively affect stability.

Check if all screws in both visible and concealed areas are tight. If the floor is uneven, plastic glides can help. Otherwise, secure with brackets.

Hello Gla43,

I am very familiar with the issue with the Malm nightstand after moving. Sometimes it happens because a few screws loosen slightly during transport or the furniture piece gets slightly warped.

I recommend the following steps:

1. Carefully disassemble the nightstand again and check all connecting parts such as dowels, screws, and cam locks.
2. Replace any damaged wood connectors or seals if necessary.
3. When reassembling, tighten the screws gradually while checking the stability of the piece.
4. If needed, use small felt pads with anti-slip surfaces to stabilize the table.
5. If possible, secure the furniture to the wall with wall anchors, which IKEA also provides – this significantly increases safety.

This approach worked very well for me and my Malm.
