GopraHello everyone, I have some BILLY shelves that I would like to modify for easier assembly and disassembly, so I can use them more flexibly. Specifically, I want to replace the existing fixed joints and screws with a construction that allows assembling without tools or with minimal effort. Has anyone had experience with this or can provide tips on which screw connectors, dowels, or other mounting methods work best for adapting the BILLY shelves? It is especially important for me to find a solution that does not compromise stability, as the shelf will need to support heavy books. I look forward to your suggestions!

I have had good experiences with threaded inserts and machine screws. That is a sensible approach. Additionally, I recommend carefully analyzing the load requirements before the renovation. For BILLY shelves, which are usually made of particleboard, using threaded inserts is advisable. They significantly increase the durability of the screw connections during repeated assembly and disassembly.
For a tool-free, easy-to-assemble solution, so-called plug connectors or unions (connected dowels) are also suitable. These allow for quick disassembly. However, when selecting these, it is important to ensure sufficient stability, especially for shelves under load.
Important: The original back panels contribute greatly to stability. Therefore, any modification should either incorporate the back panel or replace it with other sturdy constructions.

I once had the issue of needing to disassemble a BILLY shelf multiple times, and during that process, I came across simple connector fittings that can be operated with little effort and without any special tools.
That’s very true; a shelf without a back panel was quite wobbly for me. That’s why I considered using thin plywood sheets as replacement back panels, which I can attach and remove easily. This way, the shelf remains stable but still flexible.
Has anyone tried versions specifically designed for quick swapping of back panels?

Modify for easier assembly and disassembly so I can take the shelf apart and put it back together more easilyIn general, I recommend not completely reconstructing shelves like the BILLY, but rather adjusting individual connection points so they can be operated without tools or with minimal tools. Ready-to-use fittings such as cam locks or Minifix systems can be very helpful in this case. They provide a stable connection that can be quickly released with a thin screwdriver.

simple connecting fittings that can be operated with little force and no special toolsThis is important because many solutions otherwise become too complicated and risk compromising stability. Also, pay attention to the quality of the dowels; cheaply made ones are rarely reusable. Metal dowels with threads or threaded inserts combined with strong screws are best.
If you want, I can recommend manufacturers that offer suitable fittings for furniture modifications.
