Hello everyone,
I am currently about to assemble my first Ikea Malm chest of drawers and want to make sure I make as few mistakes as possible. My question is: What important steps and tips can you recommend to assemble a Malm chest of drawers without errors? I am especially interested in how to avoid common pitfalls so that everything turns out stable and level, and I don’t have to take it apart again at the end.
I generally have some experience with furniture assembly, but the Malm chest of drawers involves quite a few screws and parts that need to fit together correctly. I would appreciate concrete advice on the process, which tools are helpful, and what to pay close attention to. Thanks!

I understand your concern about working as accurately as possible during assembly – I’ve experienced that too. The first time I worked on a Malm, I was quite nervous and took extra time to double-check everything.
What helped me was taking short breaks now and then to stay focused. Mistakes often happen when you’re under time pressure or miss something.
Maybe you could review your progress mentally or use checklists after certain sections?
This reduces stress and helps you stay calm while working.

Hey disulo,
I’m not a professional, but I believe you should have fun with the MALM! Of course, mistakes when assembling furniture can be frustrating, but they’re just part of the process. 🙂
You know what? Try to take it easy. If you’re unsure, it’s better to take two small steps rather than one big one.
And don’t be afraid to laugh when something doesn’t fit perfectly – even professionals encounter that 😉 Celebrate every small success, that’s the best motivation!

One more thing I’d add: especially with the MALM, the drawer slides are sensitive. Make sure they move smoothly and align properly after assembly.
I also recommend retightening all screws about a day after assembly. This helps ensure long-term stability.

For anyone new to the MALM, I would add: it doesn’t hurt to spend some time reading through the entire manual before starting the build to get a feel for the process.
Very important: if something gets stuck, take a deep breath and, if necessary, take a step back. As I often notice, the most important advice is: never rush.

after assembly, retighten all screws after about one day
Thank you all for the great and practical tips!
I have taken away many points:
- Be patient and try to approach the task with as little stress as possible
- Prepare and use the right tools
- Fully tighten screws only at the end
- Keep the work surface level and clean
- Install drawers last
- Check the screws again after a day
Especially the advice to ensure precise fitting and to keep holes free of debris was new to me.
I will carefully reread the instructions before I start and then proceed step by step.
If I have any further questions, I will gladly get in touch again. Thanks to all of you for the support 🙂
