Hello everyone,

About a year ago, I bought a Malm bed frame from IKEA. At first, it was very stable, but over time I’ve noticed that the frame is visibly warping in some areas, especially around the sleeping surface. I’m curious why the Malm bed frame warps after some use, even though it’s supposed to be designed for everyday furniture use. Is this due to the construction, the material, or maybe because all Malm models tend to have the same issues after a while? I’ve already tried tightening the screws, but that doesn’t really help in the long term. Can anyone shed some light on this and maybe provide a detailed explanation or tips on how to prevent the warping?

The Malm bed frame is made of particleboard, which can swell and warp when exposed to moisture. This is due to the nature of the material. Tip: Ensure good air circulation and avoid moisture under the bed.

Hello Kajeannine,

regarding your concern: The warping of the Malm bed frame is mainly related to the material used and the manufacturing process. The panels are usually particleboard with a thin decorative foil, which is less stable than solid wood. Particleboard reacts to moisture and uneven weight distribution, which can lead to deformation over time.

Additionally, the construction may not be designed to withstand repeated stresses optimally. Screws and joints can loosen, creating tension that further increases the warping.

That sums it up well. I recommend regularly checking the frame, tightening screws, and ensuring dry indoor air.

Sometimes reinforcing critical areas with additional wooden slats can help if you have the necessary DIY skills.

It is often due to poor installation. If screws are not properly tightened, gaps can form and increase over time. Carefully check all screws again.

Hello,

From a building physics perspective, the Malm bed frame is made of veneered particleboard, which has low dimensional stability. This means it is very sensitive to changes in humidity and temperature, which can cause it to warp.

Another factor is the simple construction with metal fittings, which can loosen under load. Additionally, using it as a sleeping surface with varying pressure points over time leads to mechanical stress that promotes material fatigue.

To prevent issues, I recommend:
- Keeping indoor humidity stable between 40-60%
- Regularly checking the joints and connections
- If necessary, adding additional center supports for the slatted frame

Often the problem is poor assembly. If screws are not properly tightened, play develops that increases over time.

That is correct, but it is only one of several factors.

I understand your frustration, Kajeannine. I had the same issue with my Malm bed, and it really affects sleep quality when the bed moves or creaks.

I experienced the same, especially during seasonal changes when the heating is turned on or off. I've made it a habit to disassemble the bed every few months and reinforce the joints. It also helps me to maintain a stable indoor climate in the bedroom.

I hope you find a solution that works for you. Have you considered getting a different model made of solid wood? That might be more worthwhile in the long run.
