Hello everyone, I am planning to buy some furniture from the Malm series by IKEA, but I am a bit uncertain about its durability. So my question is: How long do Malm furniture pieces typically last when used in an average household?

I am particularly interested in their longevity under everyday conditions, such as regular use of drawers and shelves. It would also be helpful to know if there are common weak points or typical signs of wear to be aware of before making a purchase. Perhaps you also have tips on maintenance or recommended handling to extend their lifespan. Looking forward to your experiences and insights!

Hello Elkar,

interesting question! From a technical standpoint, Malm furniture is generally positioned in the lower to mid-range segment in terms of durability due to its construction and the materials used. The main components are usually particleboard with a melamine coating, which is fairly resistant to scratches and moisture but has limited mechanical load capacity.

On average, you can expect a lifespan of about 5 to 8 years with normal use. The drawer slides are often a weak point: they tend to wear out under heavy use, especially if they are not cleaned or adjusted regularly. The joint connections of the panels, typically made using dowels and metal fasteners, can also start to wobble or loosen over time.

Additionally, the quality of assembly is crucial. Poorly assembled furniture becomes unstable more quickly and thus less durable. For frequent use, I would recommend checking and tightening the screws every few months if necessary.

Do you have any special requirements, such as very heavy loads on the furniture or heavy use by children? This could significantly affect the durability.

Well, I think with IKEA furniture you always have to think twice before talking about durability. Malm is affordable and fits within this price range – so why even expect a long service life? In my opinion, IKEA is more of a disposable option than a lifelong investment.

That’s true, but especially with furniture that is frequently reassembled, it’s a rather unsatisfactory factor. Honestly: how often do you want to fuss around when the screws start to loosen? Comfort often suffers. I prefer solid wood or at least brands that seriously focus on durability.

My conclusion: Malm lasts roughly 5 years and then becomes an unstable structure with the charm of an experimental project. 🙂

Hello everyone! 🙂

I once had a Malm wardrobe at home that still looked quite decent after nearly 7 years of heavy use. Sure, there were some minor scratches and slight warping in places, but overall the piece of furniture was surprisingly durable.

It’s also important to remember that Malm is designed within a price range focused on functionality and modern design. It’s perfectly sufficient for everyday use, and if something does break, you can usually replace it at a low cost.

I have to disagree a little here. Of course, it’s not solid wood with a hundred years of history, but for everyday living in apartments, it’s really just fine. A bit of care during assembly and occasionally tightening the screws—that’s all it takes. 😉

Hello Elkar and community,

I would like to add something that is often overlooked when discussing the durability of Malm furniture: environmental and usage factors.

A piece of furniture placed, for example, in a humid kitchen or a very variable climate will deteriorate faster than one kept in a dry, temperature-stable room. Additionally, the type of use is crucial: a desk subjected to heavy daily use with heavy equipment will show more wear than a bedside table mainly used for decorative purposes.

In Malm furniture, the drawer rollers are often made of plastic, which is quiet but tends to wear out faster under heavy load. The surface coating also suffers when heavy or sharp objects are frequently moved on it.

For maintenance, I recommend wiping the furniture regularly with a damp cloth (not wet) and avoiding aggressive cleaning agents, as these can damage the coating.

If you tell me where and how you plan to use the furniture, I might be able to give you a more precise assessment.

In short: With normal use, Malm furniture lasts about 5 to 7 years.

During that time, you will usually notice loose screws and worn drawer runners.

If you want something durable, this is not the first choice – but it is relatively decent for the price.
