Hello everyone, I have been using several Billy bookcases from IKEA for several years now. I have increasingly noticed signs of wear and minor damage on the edges, the back panel, and the shelf strips. My question is: How can I accurately identify furniture wear on the Billy bookcase, and more importantly, when is it worth repairing rather than replacing it? Are there specific criteria or indicators that clearly suggest it is better to invest in a new one instead of repeatedly fixing the old one? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

The most important issues are unstable floors or shelf parts that no longer hold. Minor scratches can be ignored, but as soon as stability is compromised, a repair is worthwhile. If the back panel is torn, it is often better to replace it.

Wear and tear on BILLY shelves is mainly visible at mechanical weak points: especially the fasteners (screws, dowels), the shelf supports, and the back panel. If screws no longer hold properly or dowels swell, stability is compromised. If the thickness of the back panel decreases significantly or cracks appear, the load-bearing capacity is considerably reduced. As a general rule, repairs are worthwhile as long as the supporting structure remains intact and no major deformations are present.

I would like to add that when deciding on a repair, the effort involved should be weighed against the cost of the replacement part. Many BILLY repairs, such as replacing shelves or screws, are straightforward and inexpensive. In cases of clearly visible water damage or significant deformation of the carcass, replacement is usually more economical. Sometimes it is the small defects that accumulate; in such cases, a repair is only worthwhile if the time required is realistically considered.

I also suggest reinforcing worn shelf support strips, for example with metal brackets. This can extend their lifespan. Additionally, you should check whether the screw holes are worn out. This often causes unstable side walls. In such cases, wood filler or special inserts for enlarged holes work very well.

Super interesting topic! 🙂 Personally, I think any repair that restores the stability of the furniture is definitely worth it, especially with BILLY shelves, because they are so versatile! For small issues, I have always used wood glue or even a bit of paint to touch up. If it still wobbled, I tightened the screws again, which made a big difference! And once the shelf is back in good shape, it’s really enjoyable to keep using it! 🙂
