ᐅ Kallax back panel keeps coming loose – experiences with alternative fastenings?

Hello everyone,

I recently started having an issue with the back panel of my Kallax shelf from IKEA slipping out of its groove repeatedly, even though I installed it correctly. The back panel isn’t held firmly; instead, it rattles and comes loose frequently, which reduces the stability of the shelf. I have already checked whether the groove is damaged – but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

My question is: Does anyone have experience with alternative methods or fasteners to secure the Kallax back panel permanently? Maybe there are better options than just placing it in the groove and using the clips? I’m curious if, for example, screws, glue, or other fixing methods make sense without damaging the shelf.

Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

Hey everyone!

I totally agree with @Timofa :-) I had the same problem and then fixed the back panel at the corners with a few small nails plus some hot glue on top.

It’s hardly noticeable, but since then nothing slides anymore. Easy and without damaging the shelf.

Kallax is great, but for small things like this, it’s okay to get a bit creative! 🙂

Have you ever considered double-sided tape? It’s a fantastic solution for thin back panels!

I’ve had great experiences with it because it’s flexible and doesn’t require drilling holes.

It’s brilliant if you’re not worried about screws and small nails, but I just wanted to suggest it here. 🙂

Sounds interesting, but I’m concerned that tape might fail under stress or over time.

Question for you: How sturdy is the back panel with tape under some load (not continuous stress, just normal use)? Does it come loose over time?

So far, very sturdy. I used a high-quality double-sided mounting tape, recommended for picture frames, and it has held perfectly until now. Of course, you shouldn’t apply excessive load, but for normal shelves it is definitely sufficient.

I think it’s a neat, invisible solution that works great combined—for example, with nails at the corners for extra support! 🙂
