Hello everyone, I have a Malm nightstand from Ikea and want to replace the drawer slides because the runners on my drawer are not working properly anymore – the drawer sticks and moves unevenly. My specific question is: How do you correctly replace the drawer slides on the Malm nightstand? Are there any special considerations when removing the old slides or tips for installing the new ones? Do I need to remove the entire drawer, or is it enough to loosen the guide rails? I’m also interested in whether there are different types of drawer slides for the Malm and how to identify which type I need. Thanks for your help!
Hello Palonar, I understand your concern – the drawer slides on Malm nightstands are simple in design, but there are a few things to keep in mind when replacing them.
1. First, pull the drawer all the way out; you need to lift it slightly to release it from the guiding rails. Often, the side clips or tabs on the locking mechanisms need to be gently pressed.
2. The old slides are usually attached to the drawer and the cabinet with screws. Remove these carefully.
3. When purchasing new slides, make sure they are the same length and type. Malm nightstands often use metal slides with plastic guides, which should be replaced exactly.
4. When installing, first screw the slide onto the cabinet, then attach the one on the drawer. After that, reinsert the drawer and check that it runs smoothly.
5. Avoid overtightening the screws, as this can warp the wood.
If you still know the exact version number of your nightstand, that will help in finding the correct replacement parts.

When installing, first screw the rail onto the cabinet body, then onto the drawer. This is a very useful tip. I would like to add that when removing the drawer, you should pay attention to the alignment of the rails – the rollers are usually positioned at the front or back to guide the drawer properly.
Additionally, it can help to treat the wood lightly with oil if the wooden strips on which the rail sits appear a bit dry or rough. This makes it easier to slide the rails and ensures smoother operation.
It's great to see so many tips already shared here! 🙂
I completely disassembled my Malm nightstand to get to the drawer slides – it was actually easier than I expected! Just patiently press the clips and pull the drawer out.
And if you order new rails: make sure to get exactly the same ones, the IKEA standard series, otherwise it won't work. Good luck to everyone, you're doing great! 😉
