Hello everyone, I have a Malm nightstand from Ikea and want to replace the drawer slides because the runners on my drawer are not working properly anymore – the drawer sticks and moves unevenly. My specific question is: How do you correctly replace the drawer slides on the Malm nightstand? Are there any special considerations when removing the old slides or tips for installing the new ones? Do I need to remove the entire drawer, or is it enough to loosen the guide rails? I’m also interested in whether there are different types of drawer slides for the Malm and how to identify which type I need. Thanks for your help!
I know the problem with sticking drawers, it’s really annoying. The first time, I was unsure if I was going to break something. What helped me was working step by step, without rushing. Even if the slides are removed, don’t panic, they are sturdy. I just wanted to give some encouragement: it’s not rocket science, and even if you have little experience with tools, you can do it! 🙂
Palonar, to turn this into a brief tutorial:
1. Pull the drawer out completely and lift it slightly to release it.
2. Remove the side rails by loosening all screws.
3. Obtain new rails that fit exactly (compare measurements).
4. First, screw the new rails onto the cabinet body.
5. Then attach the new rails to the drawer.
6. Slide the drawer back in, move it gently, and check that everything runs smoothly.
One more tip: If the drawer doesn’t slide smoothly, apply a small amount of silicone spray or wax to the runners. This helps a lot!

the wheels slide smoothly along the railsExactly, that’s something you should check.
I would cautiously add that some Malm drawers also have self-supporting metal rails, which aren’t screwed into the wood but simply clipped in place. In that case, press down in the center of the drawer bottom, and the rail will slide out. These are often harder to remove than screw-mounted types.
And very important: before buying new rails, make sure to check whether they come with or without soft-close – this can cause confusion when replacing them.
Good luck with the replacement!
