Hello Peter,
my wife and I are currently planning a major renovation of our house, and among other things, the topic of upgrading the heating system has come up.
We have also come across infrared heaters but are unsure whether this type of heating makes sense given the electricity prices and other factors.

Does anyone here possibly have experience with such a heating system and can share some insights?

Best regards,
Peter and Hannelore

I feel the same way, @Paswina. Have you received any details about the system? Heating energy demand or similar?

What new insights are you expecting?
A direct electric heating system simply requires about 4-5 times more electricity than a heat pump.
Whether the house is well insulated enough to live with that level of consumption is something that needs to be calculated and decided on a case-by-case basis.

Experience, for example regarding previously estimated heating costs versus actual heating costs. Or, for instance, whether they can cover all electric heating consumption entirely with their own power generation.

It is generally always interesting to read, when following a discussion, how the original poster reflects on it a few years later 🙂

Unlikely if we’re talking about photovoltaic systems the size of those used for a single-family house. You would need a much larger barn and the appropriate battery storage. This kind of setup becomes more interesting if you mostly use wood for heating anyway and only use infrared as a supplement when you’re not home and want to prevent the house from cooling down. Without rereading everything, I think that was also the case with pagoni.

Hi @eenuep1,
unfortunately, I haven’t heard anything from pagoni yet. I received calculations from Welltherm and also from Vestaxx (they have IR heating integrated into the windows and are used, for example, in Talishaus). Both estimate about 6 kW of installed heating capacity. However, I can subtract 1.1 kW from that because it’s the heating in the bedroom. We haven’t had the bedroom heater on at all in the last 5 years (and currently it's not even an EH-40...). So, that leaves about 5 kW of heating capacity. But that’s only if they run at full power, which they won’t. So I’m expecting around 3000 kWh of heating electricity consumption. Plus, we’ll have photovoltaic panels on the roof.
Best regards

You cannot simply subtract a room when calculating the heating load. After all, it is within the thermal envelope and will be heated indirectly by the other rooms once the heating is turned off.
