Hello, we are considering placing the air-to-water heat pump about 2 meters (6.5 feet) sideways behind the carport of our new semi-detached house (see view of the air heat pump, blue box). The exhaust side would then face the garden (see arrow) and not against the prevailing wind direction. The minimum distance to the neighbor of 3 meters (10 feet) has not been required in NRW since the beginning of this year. It is still unclear whether a hedge or a wired fence will be placed to the right of the heat pump; the heat pump could also possibly be covered. Is our idea realistic in terms of implementation considering the noise development? Unfortunately, it is still an uncovered niche.

Never place them anywhere along a frequently used passage. These units are now so quiet that you hardly hear them, but they release cold air, which can be quite annoying to deal with constantly.

Where do others usually install their heat pumps? The noise level is not that critical. However, as mentioned before, the "cold air" is not exactly beneficial for plants located directly opposite.

Unfortunately, we do not yet know where the neighbors are placing their heat pumps.

Are you building a semi-detached house with apparently twin-like halves – with a general contractor (GC) involved or buying it from the developer?
I find it curious that the question only comes up for you, and the neighbor’s solution is unknown...

Yes, we bought it as a turnkey property. Originally, the developer planned to place the air-to-water heat pump in the garden due to the minimum distance of 3 meters (10 feet) from the neighboring semi-detached house. We informed the developer about the decree issued by the NRW Ministry of Construction on 02.05.23, which states that the 3-meter (10 feet) minimum distance is no longer mandatory. Now we are looking for an alternative location, see the illustration above. We do not yet have the neighbor’s contact information, but it will certainly become available soon.
