Hello!

We are interested in buying a semi-detached house. Unfortunately, the garden faces north, but the plot extends 30m (100 feet) to the rear, so we expect to have some sun in the garden. However, I would also really like to have sun on the terrace at the house.

Now the question is which semi-detached house would be the better choice (left or right – that is, west or east side). My thought was that the left, west side might get more light during the day, but there is a large house right next door...

In general, I would prefer the half that receives more sun in the garden and, if possible, also offers a bit of distance from the house on the terrace. The house next to the marked plot on the left has a pitched roof.

I would be grateful for any advice regarding sun and shade and your opinions about which semi-detached half to choose.

Best regards!

I would choose the west side, as you can still install a few windows there and the house benefits from the west.
A seating area is also possible on the west side.
The bench in the front yard will also get evening sun.

The garden doesn’t matter much, as every house will get about the same amount of sun there. The difference is negligible.

However, if the daily routine is more focused on mornings and the first half of the day, I would choose the east side.

Judging by the situation shown in the picture, I would choose the "right" half in this case and make sure that the neighbor of the semi-detached house does not put up a shadow-casting fence in the garden. Normally, the west side is more desirable, but here the neighboring buildings, including bushes and garages, make the east side more favorable.

I would also choose the east side because of the neighboring house.
Although you never know what might be built there, as there is a lot of open space...
I would prefer a north-facing garden; we currently have one exactly facing south, even though I'm not particularly sun-loving.

So, the east side, and then a nice sheltered seating area in the garden with a south/west view and a wall on the east side for wind protection and heat retention.

Thanks for your opinions.
I had similar thoughts regarding the construction on the west side.
However, I do want to have some sun on the terrace by the house (maybe with a 2m (6.5 feet) distance from the house).
Am I correct in thinking that the west side would then be more favorable?
I also considered that there might be more daylight inside the house during the day on the west side.
I'm really quite torn...
