I am currently planning our terrace but I’m not quite sure about the details yet, so maybe you can help me out :-)
At first, I was thinking of a southwest-facing terrace, but in the evening the sun on the west side doesn’t really reach us properly because of the neighbors, so we would only benefit from it in the morning when the sun is too strong. Now I’m considering skipping the west terrace and instead installing a retractable awning on the south side later on.
Attached are different concepts along with photos of the current situation.
For the surface, I’m thinking of using paving bricks to keep everything uniform with the driveway and pathways (dark, to match the facade).
There are six of us in the household, and we often have guests.
What do you think? Which concept would you prefer?

Kind of. If you want to preserve the color of the wood, you need to oil it regularly. If you want it to weather to a gray color, then there’s no major maintenance required.
In the end, it also depends on personal taste and possibly ecological considerations (keyword tropical hardwood).
You can get a nice brown color with durable (local) wood such as thermally modified wood (like thermo ash, etc.). This wood is also extremely durable. Tropical hardwoods are also attractive, ranging from brown to reddish to striped varieties (classic Bangkirai, but also IPE, Cumaru, Garapa, and others). Bamboo works as well.
Local options that are less durable include black locust, larch, and pine (which I don’t like). At our construction site, they asked if the exterior finish would have a wood or stone terrace later, since this affects waterproofing. We decided on a stone terrace, which will be completed and ready with the handover of the house.
I was just thinking:

Terrace + paths: gray
or
Driveway + paths: black
Terrace: gray
And then I stick with the southwest-facing terrace
You mean the shelter? It stays for now. I might upgrade it later with an outdoor kitchen and some panels in front 🙂

In Germany, there are far more days when people appreciate every bit of warmth and heat storage than overly hot days.
I wouldn’t really base my decision on that.

WilderSueden28 Apr 2022 15:00It depends on where you live (here, midsummer lasts about 2.5 to 3 months) and (much more importantly) when you plan to use the terrace. If you only sit there in the evening, warm paving can be an advantage once the sun has moved around the corner. However, evening sun combined with heat can be too much. Our balcony, facing west-northwest, is unusable for dinner at 6 or 7 pm in midsummer without any shading, as the sun directly hits it and the concrete radiates heat from below.
