Dear forum members,

I noticed some time ago that if I want to tile my concrete staircase, for example, I would need to raise each step by 6 cm (2.4 inches).

I have the following questions:

1. According to my builder, this is normal, and the staircase is always delivered this way so that, for example, 3 cm (1.2 inches) oak boards can be installed. Is that correct?

2. What is the best way to proceed? Should I sand the staircase, apply a primer, build formwork, apply flexible mortar (tile adhesive), and then pour screed concrete?

Thank you very much.

Hello,

I’m not a professional, just sharing my experience.
With us, the concrete staircase was also "lower." According to the architect and some craftsmen I spoke to, this is quite common, though I’m not sure if it’s standard practice.
The height was leveled using Wedi boards. But be careful—usually, a concrete staircase isn’t perfectly precise down to the millimeter.
You might need to level 5.7cm (2.2 inches) in one spot and 6.2cm (2.4 inches) in another. So don’t just assume it will be exactly 6cm (2.4 inches) everywhere.

I don’t understand why tiling should add up to 6 cm (2.4 inches) in height. You should clarify in advance how the floor build-up is designed both above and below, and compensate for any different total thicknesses in the stair calculation.

I addressed this issue four weeks ago in “Developer Offers: Caution with Special Requests” and explained it in more detail there. Unfortunately, the range of options is often quite limited with developer projects.

The best approach is not to build anything up yourself, but to clarify this with your developer before production. Adding so much build-up is already in the realm of poor workmanship—at best it’s borderline tinkering.
