Hello,
what is your opinion on buying recycled crushed stone for the house’s foundation slab? We need to overcome a relatively large height (1.2 m (4 feet)), and this could save a considerable amount of money. So far, I have heard mixed opinions but no real explanations.
What are your thoughts on this topic?

No one will ever look under your foundation slab. And if they do, it’s bone dry thanks to the frost protection layer.
That’s why I’m annoyed that I have XPS insulation for KfW40 standards under my slab.
In theory, it’s beneficial. In practice, it’s almost wasted money.
Gravel is many times better. Even using filling sand meets the structural requirements.

In theory, it helps. In practice, it’s ‘almost’ wasted money.
Gravel is many times better. And even with filling sand, the structural integrity is maintained. Here, you are mixing up a lot. Whether someone looks under the slab or not does not prevent the house from settling.
And your XPS insulation is not supposed to prevent the house from settling or stop water from penetrating, but to improve insulation.

And your XPS insulation is not meant to prevent the house from settling or stop water from entering, but to improve insulation. That's correct. I just wanted to say that insulation under the footing is practically far less effective than what the calculation model suggests.
