Hey,

I'm a bit stuck at the moment. I'm looking for an elegant solution to shield the south-facing terrace from the adjoining street. On one hand, as a windbreak, and on the other, as a privacy screen from passersby.

Since the distance between the south side of the terrace and the property boundary to the south ranges from 4.5m (small terrace) to 6m (large terrace), I find it hard to imagine having "two things" there. First, a privacy screen about 1.8m (6 feet) high directly at the south side of the terrace, and then something extending around the corner or along the property line, like a fence or a hedge. The space in between would feel like a kind of enclosed, narrow area or corridor. If the space were larger or wider, I think these two elements wouldn’t interfere with each other as much.

The neighbor to the west has a 1.8m to 2m (6 to 6.5 feet) high fence with privacy panels.

Maybe planting tall hedges up to the “bend/offset” of the curb on the south side could work...

I’m really a bit unsure here.

Thanks for any feedback!

Could you please add a few more labels to your nice drawing? The written notes don’t quite match the drawing somewhere 😉
In the small view, I can see there is something at the bottom, but it gets cut off when I open the photo.

Um, I can do that, but what information are you missing?

As I already mentioned: your issue with the south side is not visible. Also, a few distance measurements would be very helpful.

So, improved a bit again

The area marked in red should be somewhat protected from wind and views. The maximum allowed height here is probably 1.8m (5 ft 11 in).
The green area marks the southern property boundary and would initially be relevant for wind and privacy protection. The neighbor to the west has a fence about 1.5m (4 ft 11 in) high on the south side. So, you would be able to see over it. Whether a taller structure would be approved is uncertain, since this is a (private) (residential) street. I would imagine a tall hedge (or a fence with privacy inserts) that is already sold as a tall plant, otherwise it will take years to reach the desired height.

I don’t think it makes sense to close off both the red and green areas completely, due to the small distance between the two “installations,” as it would create a sort of tunnel effect.

Bushes or shrubs. Exactly along the red line. This has always been the standard approach and has proven effective: placing them directly where protection is needed, not 5 meters (16 feet) ahead or to the side, but creating a zone there.
