Hello everyone,
we are currently considering how we want/could design the exterior appearance of our house. It starts with a new coat of paint and some minor repairs to the facade and gutter. Then we thought about removing the rough plaster completely and giving the house a smoother (more modern) render. Of course, that changes the cost significantly. The wood in the entrance area and under the roof overhang also needs painting. The question here is whether to keep the natural wood tone or switch to white. Of course, that is all a matter of personal taste...

The appearance of our terrace railing is also a matter of taste. We might have chosen a more subtle design if we had bought it... 😎 It is an aluminum substructure that is basically indestructible. We are still thinking about whether to replace the railing at some point. That’s why everything should look more “harmonious” in the end, if you know what I mean 🙂
When someone from the painting company came to inspect, their first words were definitely to keep the plaster as it is, since you probably won’t find anything easier to maintain, and you can also do a lot with the paint.

Here are photos with the old wooden windows:

Wood beams, gutter, plaster wall, and wood ceiling visible under the roof overhang.

The front door will be replaced in a few weeks. The new door is white and features three square glass elements:

Ideas... suggestions... opinions... are welcome 😀

Like (almost) every gray-accented urban villa (?)

Alessandro’s house closely resembles our house in gray— even the tree is just as bare 🙂 :

Alessandro’s house looks strikingly similar to our house in gray – even the tree is just as bare 🙂 :

What is this supposed to tell us? I don’t understand. I don’t see any similarity, and you don’t have to copy the colors of that house. Just do YOUR own thing.

I believe the exterior of the "old" house should not be modernized. The rough exterior plaster is an essential part of the house’s character. You will never achieve the desired modern look with a fine plaster finish and gray railings made of stainless steel or wood. Comparing it to new urban villas in gray and white with black roofs doesn’t really apply here.

I also find changing the windows to be inconsistent with the house’s style. Combining modern and old requires much more than just using a different color here and there. For example, we have an old timber-framed house nearby where a stainless steel external staircase was added across three floors. That works well because it was designed by someone with a good eye for harmony and how the elements interact.

My advice may be too late since I see the new front door has already been ordered in a modern style and white. I would probably push forward and stick with green or brown—the impact of entering the house with modern interior design will then be much stronger.

Is it "worth" replacing the plaster with a more modern (?) smoother plaster, since it probably (?) matches the windows better?

I already feel that changing the windows does not fit the style of the house.

It is a risk to first install windows that suit the house less, and then choose the plaster accordingly.

I think you shouldn’t try to make the “old” house look modern from the outside.

That is indeed a true art.

You have a beautiful house with somewhat rustic shapes, proportions, and an “80s bay window.” You are not trying to create a look that is currently popular—be glad, because your house is definitely more timeless than some of the highly sought-after urban villas today.

I would therefore work with the house, not against it. On the façade, you can play with a combination of not-too-fine wood and plaster to connect natural materials and plaster color. The plaster color can be a genuine color, a statement, rather than a bland gray that doesn’t really suit the house style. The porch roof above the front door and the balcony railing can remain wooden but could have somewhat straighter shapes and more harmonious proportions. The house could also handle some climbing plants—for example, wisteria.

For something truly modern: move instead of forcing changes.

I should have turned on the "irony lamp"...
