Hello everyone,
we are currently considering how we want/could design the exterior appearance of our house. It starts with a new coat of paint and some minor repairs to the facade and gutter. Then we thought about removing the rough plaster completely and giving the house a smoother (more modern) render. Of course, that changes the cost significantly. The wood in the entrance area and under the roof overhang also needs painting. The question here is whether to keep the natural wood tone or switch to white. Of course, that is all a matter of personal taste...

The appearance of our terrace railing is also a matter of taste. We might have chosen a more subtle design if we had bought it... 😎 It is an aluminum substructure that is basically indestructible. We are still thinking about whether to replace the railing at some point. That’s why everything should look more “harmonious” in the end, if you know what I mean 🙂
When someone from the painting company came to inspect, their first words were definitely to keep the plaster as it is, since you probably won’t find anything easier to maintain, and you can also do a lot with the paint.

Here are photos with the old wooden windows:

Wood beams, gutter, plaster wall, and wood ceiling visible under the roof overhang.

The front door will be replaced in a few weeks. The new door is white and features three square glass elements:

White house facade with wooden door, glass window with heart motif, and outdoor lamp.

Yellow tape measure held vertically against rough white wall next to smooth door frame.

Two-story house with green balcony railing, glass fronts, and wooden terrace.

Ideas... suggestions... opinions... are welcome 😀

Most likely, the budget made the decision
In terms of cost, new plaster is roughly three times more expensive than a paint finish.

Who even notices which plaster is used? The tiles at the baseboard would bother me more.
The “tiles” – more precisely, thin brick slips – could possibly be changed to a gray color instead.

I also wanted to mention the base tiles. The same goes for the railing. I can also well imagine using a lighter gray for the eaves soffits.

That should be enough—the house has character and is coherent.

In our town, someone recently gave their house a new plaster finish and installed new windows. The house looks as if it was just built, it's amazing how much that changes the appearance... I would change the plaster and paint everything else gray...

Mention for what? 🙂

That’s actually enough – the house has character and is coherent.

Exactly! I think you can see that in the first photo with the front view and the old wooden windows. It’s really all a matter of taste. With the new white windows without muntins, we’ve already changed the character somewhat, and ideally, we want to continue that without losing the overall harmony.

The old windows are still visible on the right:

White residential facade with green balcony, outdoor stairs, tree in planting bed, and trash bins in front.

White two-story house with red tile roof, green balcony, wooden terrace, and garden.

If it had just been built, wow, what a difference that makes visually… I would change the plaster and make everything else gray...

What exactly do you mean by “everything else”?

Hm. What I notice is that the windows on the sides are rather simple in white, while those facing the terrace are wooden. Have you also considered those in your planning? Is it meant to stay inconsistent? Personally, I don’t find that a problem, but I might consider painting the divided-light windows.

The plaster still looks quite good. I would not do anything at first—if, upon close inspection, you think it needs painting, then go ahead. But replacing intact, nice plaster with average plaster seems wrong to me.

Neither!

Is it still possible to reorder it? 😉 I hope it is at least made of paintable wood and not plastic.

I’m also a fan of gray. Gray looks subtly modern, but it’s not always the right choice.

If you want a somewhat more modern look, I would suggest:

First of all, replace the plain trellis to the left of the garage with a rectangular one.
Next, I would get rid of the reddish base—give it a dark gray instead.

The railings front and back should be light gray, blending softly with the house, without any “dark accents.” Maybe the handrail in dark gray. The beams of the canopy also in light gray.
And here’s the important part: the front door and the shed should be either deep black or another accent color, otherwise the house ends up as a white-gray uniform look 🙂

Be careful not to strip the house of all its character!

Have you considered those as well?

The windows are uniformly designed all around. There are no wooden windows with muntins anymore. The photo shows a snapshot during the window replacement.

Above the left garage, the plaster is quite damaged and is already peeling off. Otherwise, regarding this point, it is fine. Sure, some areas could use a coat of paint. That would be the minimum treatment.

The new door will be aluminum and white. The three glass panels are because we have this design on the interior doors on the ground floor, as I already showed in the house photo thread.

That risk exists. That’s why I’m here... 🙂
